. . . but where else would it fit? "Renaissance Galleries"? The "Pirates" board, maybe? Naaahhh. Since mako11 (and several others) have asked if I intended to do ships for the Anglo-Dutch Wars, I'd thought I'd post a little preview. This is an early test build, and the graphics aren't final, but you get the idea:
Pictures from several angles, and one with a scale, for size, are here: link Regards, Jeff |

Pirates and Ren. Galleries both work for me. A lovely looking vessel! Thanks for sharing. Really looking forward to these. |

Where does one attach the broom after sweeping the Channel clear? |

I presume this are the 1:600 version rathan the 1:900 you had originally considered. |

Yes, this one is 1:600. As was pointed out by a couple observers here on TMP, smaller scales will fail to show off the details of 17th century naval architecture. At 1:900, some of the very small ships might be difficult to build, as well. However, for those with the manual dexterity to handle the smaller parts, and who are more concerned with conserving table space than with preserving the sculptured stern galleries, it will be easy enough to simply print them out at 66% to get the same models in 1:900. (I will probably do so, since I want to run games with large numbers of ships.) Jeff |

I definitely like these. I do have three comments: 1. I would eliminate the railing or replace it with thicker black or dark brown railing on top of a background the same color as the main hull color. The current white color is too obvious. 2. I would add bulwark pieces internally for strengthening, deck stiffening, and hull form. I notice in some pics the larger ships in your line have wavy decks. 3. The stern and quarter gallery should be one piece, with the quarter gallery sticking out,not flush with the side. The beauty of paper here is cost. The 17th century battles are spectacular, but battles had three to four times the ships. In metal I would go broke to refight the Texel. If these are as good as yor SYW I would buy them. |

dantheman, Sorry for the delay in replying, but I was offline for a few days (the electrical storms here in Minnesota earlier in the week put both my computers temporarily out of service). Those are all good observations. 1. The color only looks white in the photos; it was actually a light tan color. A little too light, as it turns out, but then I did mention that the graphics weren't final yet. As with my 1:300 scale models, the railing will eventually be filled in with a color matching the decks, to create the illusion that you are looking through an empty space at the deck beyond, like this:
2. Good point. I'm not sure additional pieces are necessary; I think that problem could be solved by making the deck piece stiffer by doubling the thickness. 3. True, the quarter galleries should protrude visibly in the middle, tapering back to the hull above and below. However, since the gallery is only 5mm high such an elaborate construction would be quite difficult, probably beyond the skills of many builders, and certainly an unwelcome complication for someone attempting to build up the huge fleets desirable for recreating the battles of the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Still, it would look nicer. If I can find a simple way to do that, I will do it, but I may include it as a separate "substitute" gallery that advanced modellers can choose instead of the simple one. Thanks for the tips. Jeff |

Thanks Jeff For the quarter galleries I think if they were flat but protruding out a mm or more for a 3D effect it would be fine. As long as it is not printed into the hull. If the curved sections top and bottom were a darker yellow (I.e. shadow) it would give adequate elusion to a curve. The ship above seems to do this. |
