Writing in Battlegames magazine, Bob Barnetson advises…

While shield transfers are available, I prefer to paint shield designs.

In 6mm, how do you handle shields?

Black Cavalier12 Jun 2012 8:19 p.m. PST

Very carefully or you'll loose them in the carpet.

Mapleleaf12 Jun 2012 9:08 p.m. PST

Have painted my own and have used transfers.

I have painted over 100 Hoplite shields in 6mm (only half the army) with nothing more than a 000 brush and a steady hand. I would never try them in 25mm – way too difficult.

Sven Lugar12 Jun 2012 11:39 p.m. PST

I usually use a 20x0 brush & steady hand.

Paint – one can go from the obscene steady hand portraits on individual sheilds, or judicious dots and lines will create the illusion of on effect. Just use a good contrasting set of colours.

They will look no different when viewed at wargame playing distance… but it is nice to convince stalwart large scale players that you can put detail on 6mm models including shields.

Another trick is to use a gel-roll pen or calligraphy pen and W&N ink (although really limited to using black and white then).

My poor, poor eyes! Really nice work.

Beautiful work. I'm not that gifted, though, so generally go for the transfers.

I only have African Vandals in 6mm, so it wasn't a problem.

I use paint and a waterproof set of fineliner pens.
