My question is more about the gun tube, a 9lbr as opposed to a 12pdr?, I was 99% sure the other is a Gatling gun. It's out of my normal historical range. |

Hi gents Thanks for the great comments
we are working on our next project now
eeekk! The gun tube is from Spencer Smith Miniature´s excellent (old Jacklex) colonial range
I picked up some spare gun barrels a few years ago in a closing sale
its mounted on a Hat Gun carriage. As to 9 or 12 pounder
I´m not sure! And you are correct it is a Gatling gun
from the same chaps.

Great looking set up. I am curious about the different uniforms. British Khaki, red, artillery in traditional blue? Was the Afghan war a transitional period for British uniforms. All our Afghan British wear Khaki. Really nice work anyway you look at it. |

You can certainly get away with having all of your Second Afghan War british wearing khaki, but yes, the 1878-1880 Afghan War was indeed a transitional period for British uniforms, as well as equipment. At the start of the war, British regiments in khaki wore uniforms dyed at the battalion/regimental level, using materials like tea, dirt, coffee, etc. (which allows for a wide range of "grayish," "brownish," and/or "yellowish" shades of khaki, etc. for various different units), but by the end of the war, a new standard khaki uniform was being produced back in Britain for issue throughout the army. During the campaign different regiments wore various combinations of home service and khaki field dress uniforms, the most common being blue home service trousers with khaki jackets and khaki puttees. Weather was also a factor, since the more colorful home service uniforms were made of thicker, warmer material, and came in handy during the harsh Afghan Winter. If you like an eclectic mix of old and new, the Second Afghan War is a great period for collecting and gaming! |
