I like the GW Citadel Bestial Brown paint.

MajorB10 Jun 2012 2:10 p.m. PST

I use Coat d'Arms Horse Tone Chestnut. Gives a nice "varnished wood" look.

Waco Joe10 Jun 2012 2:14 p.m. PST

Valejo's mahogany brown

platypus01au10 Jun 2012 2:15 p.m. PST

I use Coat d Arms Wood Brown. Thanks for the tip, I'll give Bestial Brown a try.

I'm colour blind, so I paint by numbers. I use Leather Brown for leather and GW Spearshaft Brown for spears when they made it.

This type of topic is very useful to me.

Thanks,
JohnG

I like Scorched brown from GW.

Cincinnatus10 Jun 2012 2:59 p.m. PST

I use a dark brown craft paint but it gets washed with a brown ink like everything else so it ends up looking fine.

Reaper Woodland Brown

darthfozzywig10 Jun 2012 3:09 p.m. PST

For French muskets produced between 1794 and 1801, I use the following mix:

1. A light gray undercoat
2. A 30% water, 20% Rencoat Orange, 50% Citadel Ogre Poop Brown wash
3. Sun dry for 20 minutes
4. Highlight with 50% Reaper Oil Cloth Tan/50% Tide free & gentle formula
5. Pixie Dust
6. Profit!

Ok, that's all crazy. Usually I use some sort of craft paint brown for all rifle stocks, rifle butts, horse butts, etc.

Sloppypainter10 Jun 2012 3:14 p.m. PST

Barenakedleadies10 Jun 2012 4:13 p.m. PST

GW Bestial Brown and for smaller scales like 10mm and less I usually mix in some Vallejo Beige Brown to lighten it up.

HistoryPhD10 Jun 2012 4:13 p.m. PST

I use Stone Mountain's "Rifle Stock"

Gonsalvo10 Jun 2012 4:22 p.m. PST

Delta Ceramcoat Burnt Umber

Schogun10 Jun 2012 4:22 p.m. PST

I used to use Delta Ceramcoat Brown Iron Oxide, but since they've changed the formulation, I use Vallejo…something.

14Bore10 Jun 2012 4:25 p.m. PST

whatever color I use tring to match my Brown Bess, and at 15mm high and 3" away it works rather well.

TamsinP10 Jun 2012 4:50 p.m. PST

I'm with Waco Joe and Sloppypainter – Vallejo mahogany brown. As an alternative, their flat brown does a good job.

Testor's Brown.

Paint Pig10 Jun 2012 7:36 p.m. PST

I don't have a hard and fast colour choice for musket timber but I do always use Vallejo Woodgrain ink over whatever I choose be it a one colour or two tone wood grain choice. Darkens the finish giving the wood a stained appearance with a light sheen.

Midpoint13 Jun 2012 9:31 a.m. PST

I thought this was going to be a parody thread. But you've all taken it so seriously and now I'm embarrassed…

Sm's rifle stock, or nearest color to it.

Personal logo Mserafin Supporting Member of TMP19 Jun 2012 1:35 p.m. PST

I mix them up. I usually have 4-5 different color musket stocks in a unit, assuming that in time of war consistent musket/rifle stocks would not be common. Look at WW2 weapons, and you'll see a lot of variation in stock colors. Why would the Napoleonic era be any different?

Kellerman22 Jun 2012 8:45 a.m. PST

Foundry's Musket stock browns and spearshafts are OK

Bottom Dollar23 Jun 2012 12:59 p.m. PST

At one of the conventions I picked up a color called "Butt Brown". I'm not sure if they meant a rifle or not…

Bandolier20 Aug 2012 11:32 p.m. PST

GW paints:
Bestial Brown – base coat
Snakebike Leather – contrast layer
Vomit Brown – woodgrain highlights

Master of Puppets24 Aug 2012 10:04 a.m. PST

Vallejo leather brown or flat earth!

firstvarty197924 Aug 2012 11:59 a.m. PST

Generally a dark brown, depending on what I have on hand at the time.

If you're color blind I wouldn't take too much notice of the names given to the Vallejo colors because they can vary quite a lot from what shade you would expect them to be. Have a non-CB friend give you advice and use them according to the numerical designator only.
