Mig-25 Foxbat - symbol of the Cold War, re-defined how you designed your fighters MacDonald-Douglas F-4 Phantom - tough, durable and a great all-around platform A-10 Warthog - so, so tough – so ugly – what a great plane for chewing ground-pounders to bits F-86 Sabre - got the US and NATO back in the game; great plane Hawker Harrier - who could not love a jump jet? |

I suppose the F-22 hasn't made anyone's list because it is so much newer? Really, it can take on 6 or more F-15s and come out winning. Truly a major game changer that other countries will have to catch up to. F-16 is an amazing plane and still relevant. F-15 is still relevant and for many years has been so. Quite versatile. If we go backwards in time more, I would have to agree that the F-100 was a major game changer. The SR-71 still gives me chills on sheer performance. Can't comment on the Soviet aircraft other than the ones that gave us fits. But they didn't sustain as we developed planes that outclassed every one of the Soviet planes. The F-4 performed its function very well. But it was effectionately known as the flying brick. Not the plane to take in a maneuver dogfight but I suppose its missile armament and ruggedness made up for its lack of maneuverability. Ah, how could I forget the F-86. Before my time but man what a plane! The A-10 as an air to ground and support vehicle has very few peers. If you are on the wrong side of one of these babies, you won't live to tell about it. |

B52 – Longevity A4 – Far exceeded all expectations. Harrier – Only practical VTOL jet ever IMHO F16 – Super pipsqueak fighter A10 – Best at what it was designed to do. My favorite fighter – the F14, I loved to watch them fly, they looked like they were alive. |

English Electric Lightning (brute thrust and utilitarian beauty in one package) Harrier Jump Jet (the ingenious solution) F-86 Sabre (just so iconic) Mig 15 (sorry, you just can't have the Sabre without the mig) Mig 21 Fishbed (looks like its going at lightspeed just sitting on the tarmac) |

F-4 Phantom II (protoype flew in 1958; F-4s are still in service today) F-5 Freedom Fighter (prototype flew in 1959; F-5s are still flying today) A-5 Vigilante (gotta love a bomber designed to shoot a nuke out of its butt.) F-101 Voodoo (designed to carry, among other things, the MB-1 Genie unguided nuclear air-to-air rocket – now there's a concept!) SU-47 Berkut (I don't know if it's any good but it has to be the meanest-looking thing in the air) LT |
