Metal figures by Tumbling Dice:

Brummie Lad09 Jun 2012 1:40 a.m. PST

Wow, they look really good!!

How do they match up with the Emhar/Zvezda/Strelets 1/72 plastics?

cameronian09 Jun 2012 1:51 a.m. PST

Cheers.

OK with Emhar, Miniart and HaT, similarly with non-Viking Zvezda. I would think that Strelets would be a total mismatch.

These guys are the only Norskis I have, one of six forces for a Dark Age campaign.

Cool. Thanks for the reply.

Which rules are you using? I have a load of plastics for WAB, but there are hardly any command figures in plastics, without proxying or converting. Think I may have a look at their figures!!

Happy gaming! grin

Rules will likely be DBA with some house rules mods or even HOTT. Has to be simple, no book-keeping to match my short attention span!

The Tumbling Dice 1/72 Viking command pack has 12 figures:
2 mounted figures (4)
3 standard bearers
1 guy waving a big axe
2 pointing mailed swordsmen
2 others

Bought them a long while back so memory is a bit hazy.

That's sound! Thanks for the info!

I prefer to use HOTT for DBA games. It's so much more fun!!

Hi guys

If you didn't know already, Paul Sulley – the TD owner and chief designer – has recently redesigned his 1/72 Dark Ages range, which includes Saxons, Vikings & Normans, to bring them into line with his existing Late Romans, Goths & Hun figures ie: Loads of variants (good news) within each code with seperate shields and additional weapons included in each pack. I checked them out at Phalanx and they were very, very good. I've just ordered some sample packs of Saxons & Vikings and will give you a rundown soon.

He's remoulding his 30YW/ECW range as we speak!

PS: I think he gave his Feudal/Crusades range an overhaul too but you'll need to check with him to confirm that.

That's really good to know.

Thanks for the information!

I didn't think TD made late Romans, Huns etc.Are these new? The only metal 1.72 Late Roman ranges I was aware of come from Newline…

Yes they are new. The TD website doesn't do itself any favours in it's presentation as you'd easily get the impression that the 1/72 ranges haven't been added to or remastered in ages but nevertheless. I actually ignored the TD stand at Triples thinking that it would be the same old same old, but while at Phalanx I caught a sight of Paul's painted-up display stands of Late Romans out of the corner of my eye and immeadiately thought 'Wow!'.

Each 8 figure pack includes 4 pose variants. The Goths are even better with up to 8 (!) variants to give a more irregular feel to units. Seperate shields are included with additional weapon packs for open-handed figures; horse packs also now come with different poses included you'll be glad to hear, so no more Lipizana-like galloping in identical cadence for your cavalry units!

Highly recommended.

I recieved my sample packs of the TD 1/72 Vikings and Anglo Saxons today and first impressions are excellent.

I'm happy to say that ALL the non-command codes had 8 differnt poses within them. The Viking range had seperate round shields (2 different types) included while the AS's were supplied with kite shields, with the exception of the General Fyrd pack (C 1066 AS4), which had round shields. I would have prefered a mix of kite and round shields supplied with the AS's, but that's a minor gripe and if you let Paul Sulley know I'm sure he'll be happy to oblidge you.

The Viking command pack I recieved consisted of:

3 x Chieftains (all different)
1 x 'Champion' armed with Danish Axe
3 x Standerd Bearers (all different)
1 x Musician
5 x Standerds (a good mix)
8 x Seperate Round Shields (2 x different types)
2 x Loose Weapon sprues

The Anglo Saxon Command pack was less to my taste as it included 3 mounted figures (consisting of 1 Chieftain and 2 Standerd bearers) and only 1 Chieftain and Standerd Bearer on foot. All the horses had different poses.

Paul has informed me that a more informative website will be up and running sometime this month.

That's exciting news IF the TD figures are the same size as Newline 1/72 figures. The Vikings that I had previously from TD are too small to mix with 1/72, nice figures though they are.

OK – many thanks for the heads up on these new ranges. As you say, the website is still the old one. If the dark age/late romans fit with Newline, then loads of opportunities for Saga and either of the Dux's in 1/72!
