Having Considered Gustav Mahler's symphonies, what about his lieder? Das klagende Lied Three Lieder: "Im Lenz"; "Winterlied"; "Maitanz im Grünen" Lieder und Gesänge Vol. I Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Lieder und Gesänge Vol. II Lieder und Gesänge Vol. III "Das himmlische Leben" Des Knaben Wunderhorn" Rückert-Lieder Kindertotenlieder Other options: Who's Gustave Mahler I really don't like Late Romantic/Neo-Modernist Lieder. And specially for John the OFM "Take me to your Lieder!" |

The German children march along, Heads full of fairy tales and song. They sing of angels in their lieder, They read of witches in their reader. I think their little heads must swim; The songs are jolly, The tales are Grimm. |

Lieder = songs (and don't ask about the difference between "Lieder" and "Gesänge"!) @MahanMan Hey, that poem is quite good :-) |

Das Lied von der Erde was included in the symphonic choices – partly because it was Mahler's attempt to break the 'curse of the 9th' partly because Mahler titled it Eine Symphonie für eine Tenor- und eine Alt- (oder Bariton-) Stimme und Orchester (nach Hans Bethges "Die chinesische Flöte"), implying that he felt it was not within the normal paramaters of a Lieder. |
