A Good-Looking Army in a Reasonable Amount of Time

Painting a wargaming army is a completely different beast from painting a single miniature for display.

In Warlord Games' Hail Caesar, commanders disregard terrain penalties when moving. It is assumed that commanders automatically switch from foot to mounted (and vice versa) as necessary. Players are encouraged to provide models representing each commander both on foot and mounted:

Players may wish to provide both food and mounted models to represent their commanders to avoid the insensitive spectacle of chariots plunging through woodlands, elephants standing upon ramparts, and other incongruous situations of that kind.

Do you field your Ancients commanders in both foot and mounted versions?

Cyclops06 Jun 2012 2:11 p.m. PST

Nope. I think HC is a great set of rules but that's a bit silly.
Edit: now I've read the post properly I actually think it's rather a good idea. It's just that those situations never arise in my games as my commanders are based on the smallest base possible so usually manage to squeeze between terrain pieces quite nicely.

Not intentionally; that is, I don't get sets that include versions of both. I like this rule in HC – now I don't have to worry if they're mounted or not – they all move 24".

mex10mm06 Jun 2012 3:00 p.m. PST

I do. (use mounted/dismounted figures for commanders)
But because I use 6mm miniatures for my ancient games it is very easy to do so.

Not ancients but fantasy I try to have chariot/Elephant borne leaders dismountable. That is to say a foot model that can stand on/in the conveyance.

For horse mounted figures (fantasy and horse and musket) I do try to have dismounts available.

darthfozzywig06 Jun 2012 4:23 p.m. PST

Depends on the scale.

CPBelt06 Jun 2012 5:41 p.m. PST

No. Never thought about it.

Sysiphus06 Jun 2012 6:01 p.m. PST

Only for my Hittite and Egyptian generals. A hold-over from WH Historical days when they could be booted from their chariots.

Dr Mathias Fezian06 Jun 2012 6:34 p.m. PST

Not ancients, but I have a few separate leaders in mounted and unmounted versions in my 28mm collection (Victoria Luise, Ungern-Sternberg, Uesugi Kenshin & Colonel Simpson off the top of my head).

Keraunos06 Jun 2012 11:11 p.m. PST

the spare lead has to be put to some use, so about half of my ancients armies have 'both kinds' of general figures.

nothing to do with HC though

Martin Rapier07 Jun 2012 2:44 a.m. PST

I have both foot and mounted Generals, but mainly because I have loads of commnd figures. I don't think I intentionally model the same figure mounted and on foot.

Steve W07 Jun 2012 4:01 a.m. PST

No I dont

Nor do I understand why its an 'insensitive spectacle'

brevior est vita07 Jun 2012 4:20 a.m. PST

Yes, I do.

I also have a sense of humor. grin
One of the many things I enjoy about Hail Caesar is Rick Priestley's quirky, tongue-in-cheek writing style.

Khusrau07 Jun 2012 4:46 a.m. PST

Don't use separate commanders, Big Julie goes nowhere without his personal guard.

Lion in the Stars07 Jun 2012 5:21 a.m. PST

Hrm… I may need to provide foot and mounted Pathans, then.

But it's not like a British Colonel ever walked anywhere when he could ride!

Yes. I also use mounted/dismounted figs for other things like motorcycles and one man vehicles. I try to arrange larger vehicles so you can get figures into and out of them.

I provide the beer, and Jim brings potato chips pretzels.
Whoever is running the game brings the models.

richarDISNEY07 Jun 2012 7:56 a.m. PST

Not an ancients player.
beer

In any period, my higher level commanders are mounted and the lower level ones are afoot.

RHIP (Rank Has Its Privileges).

Mapleleaf07 Jun 2012 11:03 a.m. PST

no hard to do as in my 6mm setups the c in c has a retinue to indicate their status

Personal logo x42brown Supporting Member of TMP07 Jun 2012 11:44 a.m. PST

I went through a phase of trying to get mounted and foot figures for all my characters. For WotR I have a foot and mounted figure for each knight. I have a number of officers with both mounted and foot figures for most appropriate armies.

wargame insomniac07 Jun 2012 1:01 p.m. PST

Nope- my command figures will be a mixture of foot and mounted. The mounted command will be for cavalry commanders and maybe army commanders.

If I played this game, I certainly would! Seriously.

Imagine the embarrassment of an insensitive spectacle in public, that would certainly be bad form.

And why would someone pass up a perfectly good excuse to have another miniature? Especially a fabu commander type?

Bashytubits07 Jun 2012 3:56 p.m. PST

Somehow a mounted model sounds a little perverse.

Lion in the Stars07 Jun 2012 8:40 p.m. PST

Only if you're gaming Flashman's (mis)adventures!

Good point!
