Terry Wise's popular and influential 1969 book, Introduction to Battle Gaming, introduced many people to this hobby. Do you still have a copy? |

I have three. The original I was given as a christmas present in 1969, now somewhat the worse for wear. A copy in much better condition I bought secondhand in the late 90s. And the 2010 reprint from John Curry's History of Wargaming project. |

I had not learned to read until much later in life. And war gaming for me started in 1979. |

Never had one. I started with the Quarrie book ( link ), but had been making up rules for action figures for years before that. The Quarrie book was great, in that it had rules for multiple periods and genres. I stole ideas from it for years. Doug |

I don't think I do, but anything from 1989 would be pretty deep in the book glacier by now. I may have simply forgotten it. |

No, but I do have "Wargamers handbook of the American war of independence 1775-1783" ,by Donald F. Featherstone from 1977, I think its pretty cool. |

I've still got the copy I had when I was a kid but I haven't read it for a long time. It's nice to have but I don't really cherish it the way I do my books by Bruce Quarrie and Charles Grant. |

Yes. My first wargame book. Lost the original (or sold it?) and bought an almost mint copy in the 1990s. |

Only got a copy recently. I'm sure that "distance lends enchantment to the view" when contemplating the books of one's youth, but I don't think I'd be doing Terry Wise a terrible injustice if I said that Don Featherstone's "Battles with Model Soldiers", Charles Grant's "Battle!" and Young & Lawford's "Charge!" were better books. All the best, John. |

Featherstone was always worht a read – did anyone remember the novels he wrote? Grant excellent if a little wordy, Young and Lawford not wordy enough -seemed to take too much knowledge for granted. terry's introduction to battlegaming had one key advantage – it gave the beginner real hope of actually understanding and achieving what he (she?) saw in the book. That was Terry's real skill putting wargaming from a somewhat esoteric hobby into a popular and worthy pastime. Well thats my view anyway. |
