Why would you want to live in an active volcano crater?

Why do you think they wanted to?

Those that were born there never asked to be born there and most likely had no means of getting away.

I doubt back then many had the option to hop on a plane or jetboat and hightail it out of there..

If you rule out places that are potentialy threatened by volcanos, you cut down an awful lot of land.

Well, from what I can see from the pic, it looks fairly spectacular inside, with lots of tropical vegetation, and clear pools of blue water.
