Do you have a favorite military unit from the Spanish Civil War?

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP02 Jun 2012 9:15 p.m. PST

For the Nationalists-Carlist Requetes.
For the Republic-Anarchist Militia.

Mister X02 Jun 2012 9:32 p.m. PST

Anarchist Militia (Durutti Column)
International Brigades

Dashetal02 Jun 2012 9:53 p.m. PST

For the Republicans P.O.U.M.
For the Nationalists Falange

Fun units to paint up and the mindsets for both groups are odd enough to be intriguing.

basileus6602 Jun 2012 11:48 p.m. PST

For the Republicans, the 82 Brigada mixta.
For the Nationalists, 4th Tabor (battalion) of Regulares (Moors)

Captain dEwell03 Jun 2012 3:27 a.m. PST

Cardinal Ximenez03 Jun 2012 6:42 a.m. PST

Moroccan Regulares

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER03 Jun 2012 7:05 a.m. PST

The only one I know by name is The Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

ComradeCommissar03 Jun 2012 7:05 a.m. PST

Asaltos

Phil196503 Jun 2012 10:55 a.m. PST

Another vote for Asaltos. They were on both sides and had their own armored car!

MacKenzie/Papineu (Canadians of the International Brigade), but only because I once met men who served in it.

Etranger03 Jun 2012 11:32 p.m. PST

Durutti Column. Got to love a faction named after a musical group…. grin

Or the International Brigades.

Early war militia columns!

flooglestreet08 Jun 2012 7:52 a.m. PST

I got to vote for my sister union, the CNT, and the Abraham Lincoln brigade because I often march with the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. We used to have Brigaders in our Veterans for Peace chapter.

POUM – comes from readin "Homage to Catalonia" at college.

Beyound that – anyone fighting the Carlists.

No votes for the Blue Shirts?

mashrewba24 Jul 2012 3:04 p.m. PST

I don't know =-maybe the NKVD.
I suppose really it's the British Battalion -I surprised no one has foamed on about the Condor Legion.
I think the Basques need a look in here while we're at it.
Actually now I'm focussed on this all those blokes who fled at the end of the war and joined the SAS etc in the desert and especially the guys from the labour battalion of whatever who picked up the weapons dropped by the fleeing French and fought of the beastly Hun in 1940.
Not to mention the Spanish crewed tanks that arrived in Paris in 1944. Not strictly SCW units of course but hey.

Patrice25 Jul 2012 7:06 a.m. PST

POUM

Tgunner27 Jul 2012 6:26 p.m. PST

Republic: The British Battalion despite being an American. Something about communist British is very amusing to me. Plus their stand at Jamara was pretty inspiring.

Nationalist: Humm… not to sure here. The Spanish Foreign Legion was pretty interesting to me if for no other reason than their name is cool.

Archduke Stick12 Aug 2012 3:25 p.m. PST

From a wargaming perspective:

Carlists for the Nationalists (because of the uniforms, the red berets with tassles look fantastic when painted [I use Empress minis, primarily])

for the Republic… probably the Anarchist Militia. They also look good on the table.

I think the SCW is a great war to game, since there are so many (colourful!) factions.

It's still considered an insult in Ireland today, to call someone a "Blueshirt".

NY Irish18 Aug 2012 6:13 p.m. PST

…Even if you did vote for Kenny?

macconermaoile19 Aug 2012 4:30 a.m. PST

NY Irish,
It was a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea. I voted for the deep blue sea.LOL

Hard to pick just one…

CTV if we are talking Nationalists.

Agree with Shagnasty about the Asaltos – good all rounders.

Cheers
Mark
