If I can't have ride of the Valkyries on bagpipes, Scotland the Brave. It still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and I am not a Scot, lord only knows what it is like for them. @ HistoryPhD You may have just opened a whole bucket o¡¦ worms The regiments we have now are far fewer than the ones we used to have, a combination of cuts and more cuts, heaped upon further cuts. But this is neither the time and the place
A Regiment might have several marches, depending upon what was going on. e.g. On parade, Royal Salute, General Salute, Advance in review Order, the Regimental Charge, etc etc. Also, a company of the Battalion might have its own March. Try this for a flavour link Some of the marches King¡¦s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) Regimental Marches: ¡¥Blue Bonnets O¡¦er the Border', originally the march of the Scottish Borderers Militia; ¡¥The Garb of Auld Gaul' (Band); ¡¥The Borderers¡¦ (Pipes and Drums). ¡¥The Standard on the Braes of Mar¡¦ is the Regimental Charge. Company Marches: ¡¥Buglehorn¡¦ (A Coy.); ¡¥Bonnie Dundee¡¦ (B Coy.); ¡¥The Mucking o¡¦ Geordie¡¦s Byre¡¦ (C Coy.); ¡¥Hot Punch¡¦ (D Coy.); ¡¥Liberton Polka¡¦ (Support Coy.); ¡¥Cock o¡¦ the North¡¦ (HQ Coy.); ¡¥Caber Feidh¡¦ (Admin. Coy.); and ¡¥The Barren Rocks of Aden¡¦ (Command Coy.). Scot¡¦s Guard¡¦s Regimental Quick March is the Hielan' Laddie. Their Regimental Slow March is The Garb of old Gaul,
Argyl &Sutherland Highlanders Quick March (A&SH) – Campbells are Coming A&SH Slow March – Skye Boat Song A&SH Company Pipe Tunes „h 'A' Company: – 'The Barren Rocks of Aden', „h 'B' Company: – 'The Glendaruel Highlanders', „h 'D' Company: – 'MacDonald's awa tae the War', „h 'HQ' Company: – 'Scotland the Brave', Other Regimental Slow Marches: Scots Guards, Royal Scots, Seaforths, Camerons – Garb of Old Gaul Scots Dragoon guards, Royal Highland Fusiliers, Black Watch – My Home KOSB – The Borderers Queens Own Hldrs – The Sky Gathering Gordons – St Andrew's Cross

My understanding is the "Scotland the Brave is reserved for occasions when more than one Highland regiment is present, so if, for example, the Black Watch and the Gordons were going forward together, both regiments would play Scotland the Brave, otherwise you'd get a clash between Black Bear and Cock of the North. |

Scotland the Brave is a relatively recent song; the lyrics were only written in the 1950s. The tune and the title are older, first being known of in the 1890s. |

Arew we trying to be historic here? I hat hearing re-enactment Highlanders playing tunes that haven't been written yet for their period! Road to the Isles is a song. The tune is The Burning Sands of Egypt. Piobrach Donald Dhu is one of my favourites. Johnny Cope actually sounds more visceral on fife and drum to me! |
