@ HistoryPhD

You may have just opened a whole bucket o¡¦ worms

The regiments we have now are far fewer than the ones we used to have, a combination of cuts and more cuts, heaped upon further cuts. But this is neither the time and the place…

A Regiment might have several marches, depending upon what was going on.

e.g. On parade, Royal Salute, General Salute, Advance in review Order, the Regimental Charge, etc etc. Also, a company of the Battalion might have its own March.

Try this for a flavour

link

Some of the marches
King¡¦s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) Regimental Marches:
¡¥Blue Bonnets O¡¦er the Border', originally the march of the Scottish Borderers Militia;
¡¥The Garb of Auld Gaul' (Band);

¡¥The Standard on the Braes of Mar¡¦ is the Regimental Charge.

Company Marches:

I lived for many years in Scotland, so I've been to most of the regimental museums, but I don't remember seeing a list of official tunes by regiment. Thanks!!

@ Old Jarhead: Retiring, I'm partial to Dark Isle or When The Battle Is O'er.

My understanding is the "Scotland the Brave is reserved for occasions when more than one Highland regiment is present, so if, for example, the Black Watch and the Gordons were going forward together, both regiments would play Scotland the Brave, otherwise you'd get a clash between Black Bear and Cock of the North.

1234567802 Jun 2012 3:21 p.m. PST

Scotland the Brave is a relatively recent song; the lyrics were only written in the 1950s. The tune and the title are older, first being known of in the 1890s.

Arew we trying to be historic here? I hat hearing re-enactment Highlanders playing tunes that haven't been written yet for their period!

Road to the Isles is a song. The tune is The Burning Sands of Egypt.

Piobrach Donald Dhu is one of my favourites.

Johnny Cope actually sounds more visceral on fife and drum to me!

Traditionally, "Black Bear" is the march off/march back to barracks, so would not be played going into battle.

spontoon03 Jun 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

I learned to play " Windy" by The Association on the pipes. I think the title is the ultimate in appropriate, and you'd be surprised how many times it's passed for re-enactments or dancing!
