The regiments we have now are far fewer than the ones we used to have, a combination of cuts and more cuts, heaped upon further cuts. But this is neither the time and the place…

A Regiment might have several marches, depending upon what was going on.

e.g. On parade, Royal Salute, General Salute, Advance in review Order, the Regimental Charge, etc etc. Also, a company of the Battalion might have its own March.

"Donald Where's Your Troosers?"

My understanding is the "Scotland the Brave is reserved for occasions when more than one Highland regiment is present, so if, for example, the Black Watch and the Gordons were going forward together, both regiments would play Scotland the Brave, otherwise you'd get a clash between Black Bear and Cock of the North.

Scotland the Brave is a relatively recent song; the lyrics were only written in the 1950s. The tune and the title are older, first being known of in the 1890s.

Traditionally, "Black Bear" is the march off/march back to barracks, so would not be played going into battle.

I learned to play " Windy" by The Association on the pipes. I think the title is the ultimate in appropriate, and you'd be surprised how many times it's passed for re-enactments or dancing!
