Hi everyone,

I am curious if it matters to you if a company has its own domain name or not. Do you trust a company less if it has some sort of free website address?
Some starting choices:
A. It doesn´t matter to me at all, I want quality service not some fancy website.

B. I think not having your own domain name is unprofessional and would trust this company less.

C. If all else is equal, I would prefer to buy from a company with its own domain name.

D.No way would I buy from some fly-by-night joint with a free website presence.

E. Meh

B
Maybe C if I already knew the company.

I always get a chuckle when I see the URL for the UK Games Expo…

Texas Jack30 May 2012 12:10 p.m. PST

hee hee, I get it.

C. I've looked for a few companies in the UK that used a service rather than having their own domain and couldn't find them! I can't remember the domain they were hosted on, but if people can't find you, or there is problems with the common domain, then no one's going to buy from you, are they?

C. I'm in this for the long haul, so I really want to have some confidence that you have the commitement to be around for a few years…

I have some problems with companies that use free services and no url. Mostly due to HORRIBLE website design. Mine is nothing epic but some of these miniatures companies have the most confusing and useless websites.

Paypal buttons are easy to setup. Basic stuff is literally copy and paste.

Photos are a must.

I am not emailing you my order. EVER.

We use squarespace $12 USD/month and you get great hosting as well as a website interface that is really easy to use. Select a theme and customize it in a few minutes.

But hesitantly.

A. Really, my dealings are based on results (and I don't care about glitz, I start with small orders anyway).

B

But it doesn't bother me half as much as companies using a free forum service with annoying animated adverts.

How professional does that look?

Angel Barracks30 May 2012 11:01 p.m. PST

Sorry Derek.
I fall into that last group, though my free forum software did not have rubbish adverts when I started it.

:(

D.

It costs next to nothing to set up a website. If the tight wads scrimp on this then they will probably scrimp on their products as well. Never buy from a miser.

Bait & Switch?

You've already got your own domain name, it's not difficult to install your own forum there.

But getting your data out the free forum might be a problem.

I've had great service from a guy with a tripod web domain and some lousy service from people with their own .com web addresses.

I am more concerned with how professional looking their website is laid out than what the url is.

So I'd go with A.

Here's a tip: hard to remember web addresses get less traffic.

I'm pretty badly dyslexic so when recommending a company I copy and paste their name rather than embarrass my self by getting it wrong. If their URL contains their name it is an easy copy and paste giving all the needed info together.

I think this would come under C as other than recommendations the product comes way before the website.

I never really read URLs. It says link, or is a clickable color, and I click it.

While not silly, this poll is a bit odd.

While not silly, this poll is a bit odd.

Well I am glad to get some points for originality! Perhaps it is odd because it actually pertains to our hobby, and I also didn´t include any reference to boobies (a horrible oversight on my part, apologies to all). :)

I never really read URLs. It says link, or is a clickable color, and I click it.

I may be a bit odd then, because I never click on a link without seeing where it is taking me first. To me that is kind of like driving with my eyes closed. Even the generic link hypertext here on TMP has the url if you put your mouse over it.
About the odd poll, as a url watcher I found it interesting to see what companies have their own url and which do not, especially amongst those I deal with regularly (they all have their own, fwiw), and wondered what my compatriots here thought about it. I suppose we can put you firmly in the "meh" camp. :)
