Hi,

I'm currently painting up Khurasan's Norman warlord: link

I was wondering, can anyone tell me what the brown thing under his chin is? (It's not a beard!) It's a square shape, with diamond crosshatching.

Thanks in advance,

Bill.

possibly the inside of padded armor that was covering his face and has been lowered? Looking at the pic I'm not sure.

Ah yes, that's probably it. Thanks. Brown paint, here I come.

I seem to recall painting this on my Normans as mail.

Web search turned this up:

"One feature observed only in the Bayeux Tapestry and in two manuscripts is a rectangle on the breast, outlined in colour and apparently sometimes with laces or ties hanging from the corners. No one knows for certain what this was but it may represent an additional layer of mail or an extra reinforce of some sort over the breast, or it may have been the flap which closed the neck opening."

Lining to the ventail of his coif. Probably linen, so a off white, imho.

Its most likely a mail covering ( lining showing hence the cross hatching representing the padded lining) that when laced up covers the chin/neck area.
Just making one in 10mm lol
