I have a small painting service and was looking to offer Painted and Rigged Langton Ships.

What are people willing to pay for

Painted no Rigging ?
Painted with Standing Rigging ?
Painted with Both Standing and Running Rigging ?

Sundance26 May 2012 11:42 p.m. PST

Would love them, but couldn't afford them.

Lion in the Stars27 May 2012 4:56 a.m. PST

I'm not sure you could afford to do the rigging at a price people could afford. I mean, it's what, 5 hours or so to rig a single ship?

I'd expect to pay someone $10 USD an hour for labor, so a $15 USD Langton ship would set me back close to $90 USD

Greenfield Games27 May 2012 5:17 a.m. PST

I saw a guy at a convention with a small tray of rigged ships and he said that he'd paid something like $30 USD a pop for them (commission, not off a table). I was astounded that somebody valued their time that little.

5 hrs? With the right routine I can rig about 8 in that time

My bigger concern would be in shipping. In order to ensure intact arrival you'd need some severe packing which would be expensive.

Cardinal Ximenez27 May 2012 5:26 a.m. PST

Yes
$50 USD to $100 USD depending on the ship.

Steve27 May 2012 5:26 a.m. PST

I'd pay a reasonable price to have them done. I'm dreading that project. -Steve

GeorgethePug27 May 2012 6:10 a.m. PST

what is a resonable price Steve ? For Painting and Standing Rigging ?

Volunteer Fezian27 May 2012 6:55 a.m. PST

Rob Eubanks at Waterloo Miniatures has this service, but I believe it is on an individually negotiated basis. The price depends on the ship and complexity desired by the customer.

Standing rigging doesn't take that much time. Running rigging can take hours.

GeorgethePug27 May 2012 7:10 a.m. PST

Lets Start with Painting the Ships Come to a Average of
17 – 18 USD Includes, Hull, Rattlines, Seabase, Ensign
I would guess the painting when done very good would cost

36 – 45 USD no Rigging

Take Min Wage for Rigging for 6 – 8 hours = 60 USD

Lots of interest in painted and rigged vessels, but no money to match that, unfortunately.

Must make a plan to play the lotto more often, and to come up with a winning strategy.

bobblanchett29 May 2012 1:34 a.m. PST

A mate of mine here in Melbourne regularly sells painted rigged Langton ships on Ebay for $100 USD plus regardless of size/type

Steve29 May 2012 5:25 a.m. PST

For me it would have to be less than $50 USD, which might not make sense for the painter. But I have about 10 ships = $500 USD it's a lot of money. -Steve

Flak Bait29 May 2012 4:03 p.m. PST

I would be interested depending on the price. I have gotten them done for under 30 bucks painted and rigged plus the price of the ship. The rigging was fine but some of the colors where not what I was expecting. I have also paid more with other services.
I've gotten to the point that I don't enjoy painting figs anymore. The only way I can build up a fleet is to pay to have them painted.

Rob here. First advice is don't do it unless you really just have free time and want something to do. My wife and I started offering painted ships when we were expecting our second child and our little angel first child was sleeping 12 hours at a stretch. Good extra income while we popped a movie in and spent quality time together. We charge $50 USD to $60 USD for a ship painted, based, rigged with standing rigging only, and with ensigns. It's a decent paint job, aimed mainly at the gamer to put on the table. I've seen much better for double that amount. Keep in mind these prices include you supplying the ship and components. I have painted miniatures…1/1200 ships, 15mm and 25/28mm historical miniatures…off and on for years for other people, and my best advice is don't quit the day job…you never truly get what you think your time is worth. It's just something to do while you watch tv, or hang out with your buddies or spouse. We have been fortunate to have some steady customers who like our work for the price, and I thank those folks for their continued support!

Oh, and if you (GeorgethePug) are in the US and would like a source for the Langton products, I'd be happy to supply you! I really like Mr. and Mrs. Langton and love their products, and am happy to sell their goodies here!

Painted with Both Standing and Running Rigging! I know this is an old post, but are you making such models? Is anyone painting and rigging Ares models in 1:1000 for Sails of Glory deluxe games?

devsdoc24 Jun 2014 3:57 p.m. PST

Some on SOG are "Deluxe-ing" models. They do look good. I do paint and rig, for fun. Yes for fun. My painting is not the best in the world, but I think I'm not bad at rigging. I would have got into SOG the game, is not bad. But 1-1000 scale??? and only one company doing them! no way! I'll stick with 1-1200 scale thank you.
Be safe
Rory
