In a spirit of blatant self aggrandizement, here is a link to a buddy's web page, showing some of my figs: link The orc slave driver in the first pic is a converted EM-4 plastic orc, as are all but one of the orcs in the pic farther down. One in that shot is an EM-4, ex-Grenadier metal fig, but the rest are plastics. The game itself was a blast. We found that Hail Caesar troop types worked reasonably well for providing equivalents to fantasy types, especially with a few of the special rules to add flavour. For magic we bolted on the Warmaster-style system with spells from Battle of Five Armies. There were only two magicians in play – an orc shaman and a dwarf rune priestess, so it wasn't a huge factor, but it was a fun addition. As it turned out, the orc wolfrider division failed their command tests and the only unit of theirs that saw combat got there through one of the shaman's spells. Lots of fun! |

Looks like a great game. Some of my gaming friends and I are tentatively talking about doing something similar for game in the Hyberorean era, with the Norse standing in for Cimmerians and Romans for Aquilonians. I would love to hear more about what special rules you used. Peter C Sword and Sandal Gaming Blog link |

Thanks for the positive feedback! It's pretty cool to have a local group that can put on an extensive game like that. If you check out the other pics on the threads on the site it's pretty clear that my buddy is no slouch at painting! Makes for great looking games. Bracken – "old school, but in a good way" should be inscribed on my tombstone when the time comes, it's a good summary of how I approach a lot of things! Skinkmaster – that particular dog pack is one of my favourites. Funny thing was, it was sort of spontaneous – I finshed painting the dogs and thought, "Huh, that one looks like he needs a pep talk." I looked through the dwarves and there was a scout giving a report, or a pep talk
and it just clicked. If only that happened more often
Peter C. – we didn't make up any new rules, just went through and applied some from the section called "A Selection of Really Useful Rules". Basically, we looked at the units, thought about the characteristics of the various forces (mainly dwarf vs orc/goblin), and assigned one or two rules that seemed to fit. So, the dwarves with the 2-handed axes got the "2-handed weapon" rule, while the orc warriors had their Clash bumped up a bit, and had the Wild Fighters and Eager rules. They were really effective in their first charges, but got chewed on afterward. I think Hail Caesar would adapt to Hyberorean gaming quite well with a similar appproach. Doug – Thanks! This army wouldn't have happened at all without the article in Combat Zone Chronicles that got me into converting the orcs and dwarves. They are very cool figures especially if someone likes doing conversions. It's great to see the metal ex-Grenadier figs released over time as well. |

Hey, a quick question: Does anyone know what manufacturer made the ogre? I bought him around 1990, 1991, and have been looking for a few more ogres in a similar style but I can't remember much about his original packaging. Any help would be great – he needs some friends. |
