Latest WI has a theme of the '45 Rebellion, which will appeal to many locally in Glasgow!

Back to WW2 next month apparently.

back to ww2 next month! It's WW2 every month in flames of war monthly.. I mean…er.. wargames illustrated.

I think that's a smidge unfair. A quick skim of back issues suggests a WW2 theme for 8 of the last 32 issues.

I'd imagine that they find WW2 articles/images easier to source than other periods, given the context of the company and its focus on FoW.

Next month will make it 9 of 33 mind.

Midpoint – don't confuse that crowd with facts. They've been sure since the sale that WI was going to be nothing but WW2/FOW.

Certainly there is a good amount of FoW/WW2 material, but I don't think it overwhelming – and I say that as someone who has hardly ever played FoW. It is hardly a minor conflict or a niche-level popularity ruleset.

Others will no doubt feel differently of course.

Hi,
The WW2/FoW material in WI isn't half as bad as it could be and there are always plenty of other interesting articles. One thing about a themed issue is that if you aren't a subscriber and aren't interested in a particular issue's theme you don't need to buy it!
I've often criticised WI in the past, especially for the extensive use of battle reports but I have to say the past few issues have been excellent and their themes have shown a really good combination of linked historical articles and wargames articles.
WI are also showing a bit more imagination with their themes. I love this month's Jacobite issue and I really enjoyed last month's Crimean War issue. Both were about periods I'm mildly interested in (By the way Midpoint, most Glaswegians couldn't give a hoot about Bonnie Prince Charlie etc) but probably wouldn't game them so it was nice to see information presented which was entertaining to read and which I didn't know.
My opinions of the Wargemae magazines is changing as the magazines themselves change and improve. Recently I've been thinking of having a clean-out. The magazines I'll be keeping will be the new style WIs because I think they have the most re-reading value and some genuinely useful information and illustrations. WI is also not full of irrelevant and out of date reviews.
I'm going to be heretical now and say the magazine I'm most dissapointed in at the moment is Battlegames. It is becoming for me a bit too stale, samey, and old-school and if I had to drop one of my subsriptions it's the one which would go.
All the best,
George.

As a big Jacobite aficionado, I have been very surprised and pleased by the excellent work that went into that June issue with the special '45 theme. But dismayed that they've split off several major articles for later issues -- the Falkirk articles just came out in the July issue and now I have to wait for the August issue (and hope I can get it easily) for the Culloden wrap-up (how is this going to turn out for Charlie??). I wish I could have gotten all this stuff between one set of covers rather than buy three magazines and wait the whole summer. But that's the publishing biz. Perhaps they felt they couldn't give that much space to an obscure subject in one issue (altho' I detect that interest in the Jacobite wars is building).

Anyway, I have enjoyed these features and they have really inspired me to get back to gaming the '45, this time trying new rules based on The Sword & the Flame, as discussed on that subject's 19th Century board.
