I have just received my gun license in Canada. I am interested in collecting some of the famous rifles of the last century, and wanted to pick the brains of fellow TMPers. Is there no gun board?

I would not favor such a Board, because it would inevitably get bogged down in 2nd Ammendment folderol.
Every "I have a Ruger .45" thread would have the inevitable "Why do you Yanks cling to your guns?"

Definitely not needed.

Major Bumsore24 May 2012 8:55 a.m. PST

Unless we are talking about miniature guns, it is clearly not appropriate.

kreoseus224 May 2012 9:11 a.m. PST

a Gnu board ?

While I agree that such a board would be interesting, I'm afraid it would quickly spiral out of control for the reasons John stated above.

Just put it on the Blue Fezzy board.

skippy000124 May 2012 9:45 a.m. PST

Why not a weapons board. I'm trying to collect Davey Crocket warheads.

Seriously, I think everyone owns more non-firearm weaponry than not.

Needs More Blunt, Blade, Bow and Boomies!…for picture discussions alone…

Like, why do spaghetti western film revolvers sound like a 105mm howitzer fired in a box canyon?

Or a Needs More Boobies With Guns Board?

Or Ray Guns That Should be More Powerful Than They Look?

"WEAPON-RY! WEAPON-RY! NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU OR ME!"

give it a shot….that hurt…

and all this time I thought I was on The Miniatures Page….

There are thousands of gun sites, like OFM said it would cause more issues than it's worth and not really on "Topic" for the sites intentions.

Assuming you mean older weapons instead of modern full autos, these design should get you started: Martini-Henry, Lee-Enfield, Mosin Nagant, Mauser and Springfield. The Krag is also an interesting design.

There are plenty of gun sites/boards out there, so my vote is "no."

A Twiningham24 May 2012 10:19 a.m. PST

Since he's Canadian he'll want to get a Ross also!

skippy000124 May 2012 10:20 a.m. PST

Darn! No Bolter debates, how many guns can you pack without falling over, hip-shooting Dora etc.

So a non-firearm board? Naaaah, we'd just stick it to each other..

How about a weaponry board?

Swords
Slings
and
Six shooters

ancientsgamer Supporting Member of TMP24 May 2012 10:43 a.m. PST

Ah, but weaponry studies have a direct impact on historical miniatures. Not saying we need another board but I have read more than one thread talking about different parts of muskets, etc. We also talk about wargaming here and it does go beyond miniature wargaming too.

John's right.

I would immediately tar all contributors freely with accusations of sexual inadequacy, chronic paranoia, and unhealthy fetishism of the first order.

And that's just when someone wants to talk about the wood used in the stocks of the earlier India Pattern "Brown Bess" musket.

More boards, lovely.

What's the difference between wargaming and miniature wargaming?

Just start the threads in Modern Discussion. It's filled with off-topic waffle anyway – no-one will notice any more. grin

Seems similar to reenactment – a topic that might be suitable as a board for the Plus section of TMP.

You could put in a board request on the TMP Poll Suggestions board.

Some people just don't like guns. Some don't like nuclear weapons. I just embrace them.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP24 May 2012 2:09 p.m. PST

Wargaming is gaming involving warfare. It may be board, roleplaying, computers, game consoles, paper figs, etc. Miniature gaming involves miniatures made of metal, plastic, resin, etc. in wargaming.

Thanks,

John

The topic does seem to just lead to tears. But I'd be cool with it.

skippy000124 May 2012 5:50 p.m. PST

I'm fascinated with firarms until I have one in my hand. Then I feel…diminished.

Valator24 May 2012 6:57 p.m. PST

Why ask fellow TMPers about guns? There are, literally, hundreds of gun forums out there with thousands of members with incredible knowledge on all aspects of the subject.

And even on those sites, the topics often turn toxic.

tonantius24 May 2012 7:00 p.m. PST

Bowman,

I would be happy to talk to you about this subject. How can we contact each other. I collect military firearms as well.

Just remember tonantius "YOU CAN'T HUG A CHILD WITH NUCLEAR ARMS"

Perhaps bill will need to build an extension onto the doghouse. I could see this board kicking up a lot of guff.

Personal logo Martin Rapier Supporting Member of TMP25 May 2012 2:55 a.m. PST

If interested in historical weapons, then the re-enactment board is probably the best place to start.

A blanket 'guns' board is just going to become a CA one.

Militaria might be a better topic as many of us collect military stuff, not just weapons.

just visiting Inactive Member25 May 2012 8:35 a.m. PST

"One cannot have too many weapons". I think we need a Conan Quotations board….

The last time I tried to mix guns with wargames, the neighbors called the cops.

Wow, John afraid of discussion on a discussion board?

and all this time I thought I was on The Miniatures Page….

There are thousands of gun sites, like OFM said it would cause more issues than it's worth and not really on "Topic" for the sites intentions.

Really?……… we have an "Animals" board, a "Graphic Novels" board, a "Home Improvement" Board, a "Tales from Work" board and other such non-miniature related boards.

I have learned much of what I know of rifles from Wargaming the ECW, War of 1812, the Great War, and WW2. So I'm led to understand that the general readership of TMP is too immature for me to ask questions on firearms? Thanks for the warning.

Raynman25 May 2012 11:21 p.m. PST

We should have separate boards for Rifles, pistols, SMGs, and heavier weapons. Then for each one of those boards have sub-categories pertaining to calibers for each. We could also address smoothbore and rifled barrels, and revolvers versus automatics. This would be AWESOME!!

Greyalexis26 May 2012 7:58 a.m. PST

I thought every forum after the ancients was a gun forum.

Personal logo Mapleleaf Supporting Member of TMP26 May 2012 9:13 a.m. PST

Like all Boards if it is ever created if you don't like it you can turn it off

imrael27 May 2012 12:31 p.m. PST

dont forget the inevitable longbow-vs-musket thread, should make a welcome break from 2nf amendment digressions.
