Well, I use Scotty Bowden's J.E.B. from decades ago. Regiments are the maneuver elements. It is simultaneous movement, reasonably simple, but a very good Civil War flavor to it. You know you are playing Civil War.

We use a few modifications, but not much.

My own regimental level variant of On To Richmond. Use either 15 mm or 25 mm figures.

I have my own "Old School" ACW Rules: One set, which I have used since 1959, is for 30mm/28mm/25mm. The other set, which I have used since 1973 is for N-Guage figures. My Club, The War Gaming Society (WGS), has used both sets for Club Games.

As of 21 May 2012, both of my rules have been combined into one book called: "Some Wore Blue and Some Wore Gray" which is available for purchase through Amazon.

I play Johnny Reb 2 (not III) and Regimental Fire & Fury.

I prefer the first, group I mostly play with prefers the second.

ACW for me is all regimental.

Cheers,

The Bandit

Carnage and Glory II computer assisted rules in 28mm.

Works great for large scale Eastern theater battles (Gettysburg, First Bull Run) and smaller Western theater battles (Mill Springs, Valverde).

This has been great. I thank everyone who had contributed to this thread and to see how long it has kept going. I see there is a lot of variety out there. I'll be introducing my new rules at Historicon on Saturday with a publish date set for next summer. Hopefully BEFORE Historicon.

Just finished a 28mm Regimental Fire & Fury game today. Was a blast. The Rebs won a bloody affair. Really starting to like those rules. We had 3 players that had never played them & they picked it up quickly so it flowed smooth each turn.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP15 Jul 2012 12:13 p.m. PST

In the past month, we've played _A Glint of Bayonets_
(Sergeants3), Brigade _Fire 'n Fury_ and Regimental
_Fire 'n Fury_.

All three games were great fun, the Yanks won one
(Gaines's Mill) and the Rebs won two (Hanover Courthouse
[VERY narrow Reb win], and Casey's Redoubt, *big*
Reb win).

'Courthouse' was played using 'Glint,' while 'Mill' was
FnF Brigade and 'Redoubt' was FnF Regimental.

We've played a lot of Brigade FnF over the years, but are
all very impressed with the Regimental level game.

Flows well, and seems a better system than its 'parent'.

6sided17 Jul 2012 5:13 a.m. PST

I'm using my own brigade-level rules called "GLORY".

Aiming to release them early next year with full support and scenario's to let people do their Gettysurg refights….

Blog on the rules is here:

Brother Against Brother, but with some modifications to facilitate game play for very large numbers of figures (1000+) representing battalions, rather than companies.

Home Grown. Named "Magnolia's, Mint Juleps N' Gritz!" Based on Don Featherstone's rules but simpler. One page, two sides. It's something of a tongue-in-cheek game. The name derives from the Dixie-pixie fantasy that the war was not about slavery but about the North trying to Destroy the Southern Way of Life. I accept this and of course the Southern Way of Life is epitomized by-- Magnolia's Mint Julep's N' Gritz.

Belis4rius31 Aug 2012 9:10 a.m. PST

JRII and a bit, a very few house rules added. Simply the best set of wargame rules I have ever played with.

Old Contemptibles31 Aug 2012 12:11 p.m. PST

JR2 for years. Looking to change but keeping it regimental as it was meant to be.

WARSTEPHEN01 Sep 2012 2:31 p.m. PST

JR3 I like the Sim release of orders.

pegbones04 Sep 2012 12:04 p.m. PST

Coming to this discussion party late, but for years played Stars n Bars: as a solo gamer I liked the command factor but did find the morale rules a bit extreme. Have now moved on to F&F for brigade level (with some amendments) and have tried a host of others for regimental, including F&F regimental (like them but don't want to rebase all my 15mms – again!). Basically need alternate moves, 1" square basing, (3 or 4 figures to a stand) with command and control factors so that I don't get to play god. really like the Regimental F&F but any hints on how to get over the base issue, other than one stand = 2 F&F ones? Other than that, am leaning to Guns at Gettysburg

essling05 Oct 2012 11:56 p.m. PST

Just starting with Steve Phenow's and Terry Gore's Mr Lincolns War.Brigade/Division Scale -using 10mm-just getting to grips with it..Interestingly doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of the posts even though it was a commercial set published some 15 years ago.
I keep looking at Regimental F&F whenever I go to a show….!!
28MM-the Group I play with use Brother against Brother.
Regards

Martin

We use "This Very Ground" by Iron Ivan with our own modifications for ACW

Dexter Ward16 Oct 2012 2:16 a.m. PST

If your troops are based for Brigade level F&F, you can use them as-is for Regimental F&F – just treat each stand as 2 deep, and use a dead guy marker to show when one of your double bases has lost a stand.
If you ever need to form extended line (which is very seldom, in my experience), space the bases 1 base width apart.

Our group just gave Black Powder a try this past weekend and I must say we enjoyed the rules.

John Thomas816 Oct 2012 3:45 p.m. PST

Ran my fire They Couldn't Hit An Elephant game this past Saturday and I like 'em more in action than I would have thought.

Bandit16 Oct 2012 7:04 p.m. PST

All my stuff is based on Johnny Reb 2.

I also play with a group that runs Regimental Fire & Fury.

Cheers,

The Bandit

F&F Bde

Wayne L18 Oct 2012 6:21 a.m. PST

Started with Johnny Reb 1 with Mini Figs 25mm ( which seems many years ago ) , tried Stars N Bars and Brother against Brother, moved onto original Fire and Fury in 15mm ( Peter Pig figures ) and 28mm ( Dixon, Redoubt & Foundry ). Sold all my 15mms and now have recently started Regimental Fire & Fury in 28mm.

So far so good with R F & F after some early hic-ups.
