Dear all, can anybody help with information about this. I can't afford Carman's book, not at £50.00 GBP+, and google isn't especially helpful. I'm looking for the uniforms worn by British troops, Foot, Light Dragoons and Lancers, and the Bengal European Regiments, in India in the period 1830-45. I've seen a few illustrations of the Wars in Sind and Afghanistan, and of the Sikh Wars, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency, even in contemporaneous pictures. Foot seem to be wearing a French style shako with or without a white cover, a white forage cap, of varying designs, and a straight sided shako either white or worn with a white cover. Light Dragoons seem to be in a short blue jacket, or a shell/stable jacket, with several differenmt forms of headgear, some white some black. The only consistent image is of 9th Lancers in red with a white cover to their Czapska. Any help would be welcome! |

Have you looked through the plates the NY Public Library has available online? I just glanced quickly but it seems that some of your answers may lie there. link |

Also, the first volume of Osprey's post-Napoleonic British Army titles, "The British Army on Campaign, 1816-1853" has a lot of what you are looking for, and much less expensive than Carman. |

You might find MAA 453 "Armies of the East India Company 1750-1850" useful as well. |

There was quite a bit of variety with some units wearing shell jackets and some coatees. Trouser color could vary--white,light blue, dark blue or grey. There were several versions of the forage cap-some with covers and some without. The shako changed from the bell top to the Albert during that period. The Osprey books already mentioned are quite good. |

Any suggestions as to the headgear worn by general officers in the early part of this period, please? Later seems to be a frock coat and cap, often with a white cover. |

Large variety of choices from full dress to different adaptions for campaigns. I second the Osprey book on Britains colonial campaigns. |

A final (I hope!) point/question. The Osprey book in question suggests that the Bengal European Regiment had, until the mid 1820's a rifle company, dressed in rifle green. I know that some of the Madras N.I. regiments also had a rifle company, in rifle green. Did the Bengal N.I. have the same? |
