"We fired our cannons 'til the barrels melted down,
then we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his mouth with cannonballs and powdered his behind,
and when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind."

--- from The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton

Parzival beat me to it…

But I might get the gun-gator just for fun, anyway.

"We fired our guns an' they kept a'comin'
wasn't quite so many as there were a while ago
We fired once more, an' they began a'runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico"

. . . by Jimmy Drftwood, set to the traditional American folk tune, "The 8th of January."

Johnny Horton sang and recorded it.

It occurs to me that loading the gator cannon via the muzzle presents itself with certain challenges. Rate of fire could be degraded if you can only load the cannon when the gator is asleep. Best to double shot it, if that's the case.

Normally I dislike fantasy pirates, but the gator I like.

So, would anyone scream at me if I included that gator-gun in a US force for War of 1812?

Or would you be too busy laughing?
