"What level of combat do you prefer in your wargames?" Topic

What size battle do you prefer?
1) I am only interested in huge battles! I must be the emperor!
2)Skirmish actions for me! I want to see the whites of my opponents eyes.
3) I like Company sized battles.
4) I like battalion and brigade sized actions.
5) I want to command the division, I can make Picket's charge work, send me in coach.
6) I like to mix things up, I like to do them all.
7) I want to roleplay. One guy and a good gamemaster is all I need.

6 mostly. Genre dependent. Napoleonics? 1 or 5. Closer to modern? 2 or 7. Medieval or ancients? Any.

I like the lower end of things… roleplaying and skirmish mostly. Somewhat larger battles if they can still have characters, tell a story.

Ancients, Medieval, Renaissance, Napoleonics – 1
WW2, SCW – 3
AWI, ACW – 5

6. I do RPGs, I like skirmish scale because it feels likea big RPG, I like platoon or company scale where each model is a warrior, and I like bigger scales with element basing because that's the only way to scale up.

Minis, anything up to Brigade.

Boardgames – anything goes.

I am with Saxondog – the combat scale is totally dependent on period

ACW/Napoleonics – grand tactical – the smallest unit is a brigade

Mexican Revolution – battalion level

WWII (28mm) – skirmish; 6mm – grand tactical

Ancients – battalion/cohort level

Medieval – battalion or skirmish

Fantasy – ancients – battalion/warband level

Sci-fi- squad level

Prefer most – 2. Skirmishes. I enjoy playing all of them.

1 & 3 & beer..

4 & 5.

Battalion and smaller for land.

I would like a game that let me handle wings of several squadrons for air, but know of none that really work.

Tactical feel but works with large battles. I hate games with 12 bases each on a 2x2 table.

In medieval battles (where I have now ccut my focus down to) I prefer battles of between 5,000 to 20,000 per side. Not sure how that into your poll options. I'm not at all a skirmish gamer. Anything bigger than about 20k per side is unmanagable really.
