Hello Folks,

I'm on internet surfing around and find some British Rifles are in green trousers while other are in gray trousers. Which color is correct? Also, did the riflemen wear both color in the battle of waterloo?

Thank you in advance,

VS

I'm sure either at Waterloo; depending on supply. The gray being more readily available as it was the standard for most of the army at the time. Dean

Just to complicate things, some, like the riflemen of the 5th/6oth, wore blue trousers.

I think that the green trousers were the equivalent of the white breeches worn by the line infantry. Therefore, in the field at Waterloo, grey trousers were the most likely appearance.

IIRC, the 95th Rifles were supposed to wear green pants, while the 5/60th wore grey. But of course on campaign they wore what they could get. The 95th is once mentioned as marching past Wellington in the Peninsula, and he had to ask who they were since their uniforms had become so irregular.

It was not uncommon for soldiers of all sides in the Penisula to replace worn out uniform items with indigenous Iberian brown cloth!

Thank you gentlemen for your expertise. I really appreciate the help!
