This is the only one I can find anywhere, and is actually a conversion:

Aren't they cute? Hard to believe that they were originally THIS:

So, is anyone making any Quad Droids for picking up casualties, or for carrying loads for troops, but with some ability to defend as well, if necessary?

Thanks,

Dan

Khurasan has a set of 'Combat' drones due for release in the near future – one of the several drive options they have is a set of four legs. Here's a couple of pics of a not quite finished 'Walker' CD with one of the weapon mounts (again, one of several options)

I did a big search for droids recently and didn't come across anything like what your after… which means there is a need for someone to make some I think.

I made a quadrupal bot some time ago:

I quite like that Khurasan model. Legs look a little static though, and it doesn't really shout "droid" as much as the little conversion that ispired this thread.

PF, was that ever released?

Mako1115 May 2012 4:05 a.m. PST

That's pretty neat looking.

GZG makes at least two different quad-walker chasis combots, both of which would be perfectly serviceable as casualty recovery bots or mule gear transports by replacing the gun turrets with a platform mount. They're also a good source of appropriately-sized legs for more radical kitbash jobs:

For size ref, you can see the recon/patrol drones at the top of that link about 2/3rds of the way down my old page here:

The MAWP(W) frames on the second page of the GZG store listing are quite a bit larger, and would make a more convincing "stretcher bearer" design. I'll have to take astab at that the next time I do an order – I bet those snazzy new NAC casualty figs would make it a breeze to bash together a "loaded" version.

The little tracked medbot in my photos is just a conversion one of the GZG civilian workbots – it's a "Wally #5" tracked bot with the superstructure lopped off.

Both GZG and Khurasan has six-legger walker/mechanoids in their ranges as well, which might be of use too.

Oh, and as long as you're looking at the GZG 2mm stuff, don't forget the tripod walker design:

That's another one that lends itself to 15mm use.

Most of the robots I've seen in any scale are either cartoonishly anthropomorphic or look hopelessly clunky and jury-rigged. Nothing I've seen looks like it could outrun a man, for example.

There are many good wheeled drones, and several that look like great utility droids.

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian15 May 2012 5:07 a.m. PST

Nothing I've seen looks like it could outrun a man, for example.

That's exactly what SkyNet wants you to think.

Seriously, take a look at the GZG spider drones. No human being is going to outrun those things, especially over broken ground. Or some of the Syntha robotic stuff from Urban War – there's a nice mix of totally inhuman but still elegant in that range. Or the Talos and Hellcat combots from Kryomek.

Plenty of plausible designs out there to run whimpering meat-bags into the ground.

Thanks dwartist, the MUUL is almost ready for release and as you say it will include legged final drives too (in addition to wheels, tracks and anti-grav, all in one package!).

It looks semi-vehicular, as opposed to C3P0, but that's because it's a NF/sci-fi version of gun drones already in service, though the MUUL is meant as a true robot rather than a drone. (Two robots actually, when a gun or the medical pod is the MUUL's payload.) When you see it near a 15mm figurine that should put it in perspective.

I use Mechwarrior Dark Age "Fenrir Battle Armor" for 15mm

Hmmm, going to have to get some of those Fenrirs. Potential alien power armor use too.

@ PF 2009

Fenris Mech (Mass Effect)! Is someone going to be selling that one?

Cdude9315 May 2012 9:40 a.m. PST

I believe CAV also has a four-legged mini if you're looking for something more substantial, maybe a centerpiece type model.

Eli Arndt15 May 2012 9:58 a.m. PST

DAN,

That Fenrir might make a good AMEE if you yanked off the backpack.

Cacique Caribe15 May 2012 12:57 p.m. PST

Eli, LOL. I thought the same at first and then I realized that, without the contraption on the back, it would probably look more and more like a headless armored trooper trying to do push ups (or on all fours, looking for his head). :)

Wellspring: "hopelessly clunky and jury-rigged. Nothing I've seen looks like it could outrun a man, for example."

My thoughts exactly. Most of the ones I've seen look like they are standing on mechanical table legs.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan Dan Dan…

And easy fix with some wire and a wedge of green stuff :)

Wellspring15 May 2012 2:11 p.m. PST

Those fenrirs look good… they have that lithe, menacing look that I'm looking for. Though I think I'll swap out the backpack as well for something more low-key.

There's certainly room for the lumbering behemoth, but fast and (relatively) small seems more effective and harder to find in 15mm. I'm a bit inspired here by the Rat Things in Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash.

Cacique Caribe15 May 2012 2:52 p.m. PST

Yeah. I'm still hoping to see something at least as mobile-looking (and with as much "personality") as the conversions in the first post:

But, for a sleek unit for mainly-military use, I think there'd be nothing like a set of 15mm AMEE robots (3 poses would be awesome):

To understand the appeal, you've really gotta see it in action:

So, get to it, sculptors!!! :)

Okay.. where are you getting the decals?

That's the one thing that I could use on all my sci fi bots and battle suits..

Cacique Caribe16 May 2012 10:29 a.m. PST

Good point. He does seem to refer to it there:

Eclipsing Binaries and Jeff Worley:

It isn't released but hopefully soon.

AVAMANGO16 May 2012 11:49 p.m. PST

Good call on the Mechwarrior Dark Age "Fenrir Battle Armor" i actually use them for Battletech instead of the smaller metal ones from IWM, if you want a few other mechs that are quads there is the Scorpion and the Goliath and several others readily available…

Lion in the Stars17 May 2012 4:32 a.m. PST

No love for the Infinity drones?

Those are almost all quads (one wheeled variation and one 'chicken walker'). They're also fairly big, pretty well filling a 40mm round base.

Scorpio17 May 2012 6:00 a.m. PST

I like the Infinity drones, but they're… a little expensive.

Gunbird17 May 2012 9:10 a.m. PST

Hey, no wonder my little ones had spiked in Photobucket in the number of views…… :)

CC, the conversion isn't that hard, just a bit time consuming.

Decal wise they come from aircraft kits (warning labels) and various producers like Fighting Pirhana decals and I-94 decals plus a bit of Doms Decals. Got 2 boxes full of those and aftermarket ones, and I never throw decals away.

J Womack 9417 May 2012 11:05 a.m. PST

…and I never throw decals away.

Sage advice.
