I picked up Warhammer 40K "Assault on Black Reach" when I was in the UK, and painted the figures up for a nephew. It actually took ages to finish, because there is so much variety in the models. You keep on finding other little bits to paint.

Anyway, I think they turned out nicely.

Having seen your other work, It's no surprise that these look this good.

I'm betting your nephew is in a distinct minority of youths with a fully painted AoBR set.

Cool!

AoBR would be perfect if…
a) It cost half as much.
b) Substitute those ridiculous 'deff kopters' for an ork dreadnought.
c) give the 3 marine personalities helmets!!! (This is fixable at home)…

Anyway, nice work. Yeah, the orks are a pain to paint…
Your nephew is very lucky!

Thanks for your kind words.

I think the price is pretty good. I mean, nothing is cheap now days. Think of the price of food/beer.

An Ork dreadnought would be fantastic; "Can ready for fragging stuff!." But that wouldn't lead people to buy more models from GW, which must be their purpose.

As it is, some people are buying three copies of this set to get started with GW more cheaply.

I don't know how much it costs where you are. Around here is 76 euros, which is not too bad for 46 miniatures, plus the game rules, dice and templates.

Not many starter sets are better priced.

b) Substitute those ridiculous 'deff kopters' for an ork dreadnought.

In your opinion, I suppose. I rather prefer the Koptas to the Dreadnoughts in my Ork army. In my tournament Ork army I do not use any of my three Dreadnoughts, but I use 9 Koptas. They have won their fair share of games for me!

c) give the 3 marine personalities helmets!!! (This is fixable at home)…

Agreed! I hate SM without helmets. They look ridiculous!

"three copies of this set to get started with GW more cheaply"

I got three of them when they came out and really have not done anything with them yet. One is still in its plastic wrap.

Plus I have gotten more of the AoBR Orks off of Ebay.

Lots of good models in them and far cheaper.

Plus none are Finecast Resin, which makes them even better.

Nice work. That is a great set!

Perhaps drill out the gun barrels a bit?

Looks good. I have to say the GW starter boxes, when fully painted always look impressive.

All those little bits of extra detail do drag out the painting time. I'm sure it takes my twice as look to do a GW figure (or most any fantasy figure) than it does a historical one.
