For the first time in ages I recently dusted off my old 25mm ancients for a game of Civitates Bellantes.
We decided to see how Pyrrhus' pikes would fare in the dense terrain of Asculum and loosely based the game on the historical battle in 279 BC.
For a while it looked like Pyrrhus was going to win, thanks to the efforts of his elephants. But in the end the Romans managed to come in on the flanks of the phalanxes and it was all over for the Greeks.

They look good as new, Simon …

in a 'Gilderesque' sort of way thumbs up

Good stuff, Simon. Didn't know you had some 25mm…

Yes they have been hiding in boxes for quite some time! Now that I have a games room the larger toys can get an airing from time to time

Fantastic looking game and figures! Love the scenario too; will have to try it out sometime soon – pikes in the woods, eh? Nice name for the game too. Best, Dean

I like the 25's a lot, that and I have many 25mm armies myself (one being a Late Roman minifig and hinchliffe army…). Great AAR Simon, nicely painted figures and great looking game.

Of course we know that Pyrrhus did not engage in the woods and tried again the next day on more favorable ground… but nice report thanks.

Well that is debatable. There was certainly fighting on the first day and it may well be that the incidents described by Dionysios did actually take place on the first day including the attack on Pyrrhus' camp by the Dauni and the breaking of a Roman Legion.
The way we set up the scenario was for Pyrrhus to gig it a go but if things did not go well to withdraw rather than fight to the bitter end. As it happened it worked out that way and we could have played a day two in open ground afterwards.

It's as clear as the water of the Granicus.

Mmmmmm. None of my ACW rules sets mention pikes. Better re-read Griffiths to see if I missed that chapter.

Ah yes, a Crosspost too far me thinks!

Unless there's a bit somewhere on Macedonians flanking Grant in The Wilderness that I've missed!

Twas Lees secret weapon, never mentioned by civil war historians due to emberassment.
