Having completed a sizeable chunk of Prohibition era Chicago using Patrick's excellent Mean Streets, I have decided to make up some of his Mean Sets as interior settings for gangster games.

I was wondering if anyone has experimented with these to allow them to be disassembled and reassembled, rather than having them as permanent assemblies?

She Who Must Be Obeyed is rapidly running out of patience with all the real estate taking up so much space and I would be very interested in any suggestions (aside from the obvious: we have been married 22 years after all!).

I have noticed that the Fat Dragon dungeons are assembled in sections and temporarily joined together with hairpins (are these what are called bobbypins across The Pond?)

You can keep an eye on what trimming would make the buildings nest inside each other, sort of like those Russian Christmas dolls.

Dear Alan,

I certainly see your point about storage! I have much the same problem, though I've been blessed recently with extra bookshelves that have allowed for more models.

However, to be completely honest, I'm not sure what can be done to make the "Mean Sets" collapsible. Their several interior walls and rooms are beyond my imagination to assemble upright--and brace with foam board, as ever--and still be able to store them "flat."

I don't say it CAN'T be done--but I'm not the cat able to tell you how.

Then again, most "Mean Sets" are a fairly standard 2" tall, and with a couple of exceptions, fit within an 8" x 10" area. I STACK mine in deep plastic storage boxes, and so have all of them to date fit in only one of these larger types.

Anyway, my two cents, and best of luck to you!

P.S. Still looking forward to photos of your "Mean Streets" layout here at TMP whenever you're ready.

The problem with fold-up Mean Sets is going to be the furniture – you could do slot-together or folding walls, but the tables, counters, brewing tanks, THOSE things are going to keep you from flattening these easily…

Oh you can collapse them…just do your Godzilla impersonation on them. Of course, you didn't mention the need to be able to "un-collapse" them! grin

How about like a pop up picture book?
