I recently had to admit that my favorite detail brush had outlived its usefulness. When I threw it away, it felt like I was putting Old Yeller down.

I was wondering if members of the TMP community ever developed inordinate emotional attachments to

1) a favorite brush
2) a favorite mini
3) a favorite unit
4) lucky dice
5) some other piece of gamine paraphanalia
6) some non-gaming related item you nonetheless associate with your games or with painting

Nope. Stuff is stuff.

kreoseus213 Apr 2012 4:50 a.m. PST

Slightly mental would be more accurate.

T Meier13 Apr 2012 5:06 a.m. PST

Not about objects.

1: Not so much…

2-6 YES…

I still miss some of the minis I had to shed while moving years back. But the metal's gone back to the place it originally came from, back to the earth.

I have favorite brushes, but they don't last long enough to get sentimental about them.

2-6…. uh, yes.

3. All of my SYW 15mm French, even though they haven't seen the light of day in almost 10 years.

Definitely three.

Altius13 Apr 2012 7:53 a.m. PST

frequently 2, sometimes 3. The other things are just tools, to be used and discarded when no longer useful. But if I painted and based it, I feel an attachment. Some, more than others.

I recently dug ot some 25mm napoleonic Minifigs I bought when I was 16 (1987) and have stripped them and am reconstituting them.

More worryingly I have found my prince august moulds and am building a regular Netherlands contingent from 1815 (converted from flank companies with a knife).

I have a load of 28mm plastics for this period but have concluded that 1) I can paint better ( not sure if this is true) and the 2) I dont care about the scale difference (actually I probably dont) 3) I am tight- I have the metal and old minis and I can melt them and recast.

My 8 year old son has been helping with the moulds and casting so I also think this counts as a non electronic "activity" in my Wife's eyes. Result?

brass113 Apr 2012 9:19 a.m. PST

No. I don't own a single thing, gaming-related or otherwise, that I couldn't toss out right now and never miss it.

My first Airfix ACW Regiments. I got them for a Bday back in early 70s. I painted and painted and painted some more. Then I patched their clothes with different colors till they looked like my version of camoflauge.

Then I thought I outgrew them. Sentimentle? Quien sabe?

I have my favorite brush that I've been using for over three decades now. I've only replaced the bristles twice and the handle once.

Lentulus13 Apr 2012 11:45 a.m. PST

I'm sentimental; but not about gaming stuff.

Sparker13 Apr 2012 5:07 p.m. PST

I too am sentimental about my old minifigs…Hopelessley outclassed by 28mm plastics, and not really compatible, but I just can't bring myself to toss them….maybe its the thought of all those days of my youth I spent painting them, when I could have been hanging around street corners or joyriding…

LHMGKodiak13 Apr 2012 5:09 p.m. PST

We definetly need to get out more

SgtPain13 Apr 2012 11:06 p.m. PST

My first thought was no, I'm not sentimental about any of my gaming staff. Then I remember that I have " a lucky tape measure ", I purchased back in the mid seventies when I started gaming. It is just a plastic and metal tape measure, nothing spectacular, however I am very protective of it and keep an eye on it when gammaing so no one walks off with "my precious".

So yes I am sentimental about some of my gamming stuff.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER14 Apr 2012 2:02 p.m. PST

1 no, but yes to the rest. There are many things I remember fondly and miss. Most can be replaced, but there are some things that can't.
