It was quite a coincidence as I had only visited the route of the raid a few months earlier whilst on a historical tour through Georgia

The silent film with Buster Keaton was filmed in Oregon. A small claim to fame regarding this subject. The engine sat in a creek, where it had landed following the big crash scene, until WW2 when it was recovered and scrapped for the war effort. |

I believe dmebust is referring to the scene where the Union general orders a locomotive onto a burning bridge assuring everyone the bridge will hold it while his men ford the river. See from 7:10 to about 8:20 in this segment of the movie: YouTube link All in all The General is one of the best comedies around and a pinnacle of achievement for Buster Keaton. Some of the equipment was actual stock left from 60 years previous. |

Yeah, he's talking about the train used in the movie, not the actual historical engine. |

Indeed. I thought there was no harm noting there is real stuff to see, too. |

Never gamed it. The escape of 8 of the raiders from confinement and their journey (in pairs) over hundreds of miles back to Union lines is quite a story in and of itself. |

One of the raiders, Pittenger, was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Fallbrook, California, where I used to live. |
