It was quite a coincidence as I had only visited the route of the raid a few months earlier whilst on a historical tour through Georgia …

The silent film with Buster Keaton was filmed in Oregon. A small claim to fame regarding this subject. The engine sat in a creek, where it had landed following the big crash scene, until WW2 when it was recovered and scrapped for the war effort.

I believe dmebust is referring to the scene where the Union general orders a locomotive onto a burning bridge assuring everyone the bridge will hold it while his men ford the river. See from 7:10 to about 8:20 in this segment of the movie:

All in all The General is one of the best comedies around and a pinnacle of achievement for Buster Keaton. Some of the equipment was actual stock left from 60 years previous.

Yeah, he's talking about the train used in the movie, not the actual historical engine.

Indeed. I thought there was no harm noting there is real stuff to see, too.

Never gamed it. The escape of 8 of the raiders from
confinement and their journey (in pairs) over hundreds
of miles back to Union lines is quite a story in and
of itself.

One of the raiders, Pittenger, was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Fallbrook, California, where I used to live.
