Which miniatures scale do you prefer for your Victorian Science Fiction gaming? (Assuming ground combat – not aerial or naval…)

J Womack 9411 Apr 2012 6:21 p.m. PST

15mm is my personal preference, but I also have a lot of 25mm.

And some 6mm.

Broadsword11 Apr 2012 6:25 p.m. PST

25/28mm.

John the OFM11 Apr 2012 6:26 p.m. PST

25/28mm.
In fact, the whole reason I got into VSF via GASLIGHT was because I had many packs of 25/28mm figures lying around that I just bought on a whim, but had no "real" game with which to play with them.
So, GASLIGHT allowed me to ivade Canada with small armies, and to use my oddball Old Glory, Soldiers of the Queen and Guernsey Foundry Figures.

Little Big Wars11 Apr 2012 6:28 p.m. PST

2mm/3mm ala Dystopian Wars (and by extension When the Navy Walked).

Big armies with lots of landships and clunky automatons are tasty…

Ancestral Hamster11 Apr 2012 6:39 p.m. PST

25-28mm. It was Space 1889 which brought me into the fold and so my small collection is based around now OOP RAFM Space 1889 miniatures. I've also bought a copy of the GASLIGHT rules, but I've yet to use them.

Mind, the land combat of Dystopian Wars interests me, but with no local opponents (or ones interested in the game), there isn't much point in my building such a force.

kallman11 Apr 2012 6:52 p.m. PST

28mm for me and I use Valor and Steel and Flesh for the rules which is a variant of Brother Against Brother.

Mlatch22111 Apr 2012 7:12 p.m. PST

28mm, although sadly, my project got put on hold a few years ago and kind of withered away.

Black Cavalier11 Apr 2012 7:22 p.m. PST

I've actually played with my 25/8mm VSF, but I also have 10mm VSF for Alien Squad Leader & 2mm VSF for Land Ironclads/Aeronef which are still unblooded.

Pictors Studio11 Apr 2012 7:25 p.m. PST

28mm. I just really add VSF stuff to my colonial games now and then.

Ratbone11 Apr 2012 7:30 p.m. PST

25/28mm for me.

DyeHard11 Apr 2012 7:46 p.m. PST

It is a function of what you wish to focus your game on.

If you want fleets of giant machines battling it out, then the sub-micro scale is what you will want 2mm or so. Games like Sky Gallions of Mars, Aeronerf, and Dystopian Wars. At that scale you do not even need people.

If you want a role-playing feel with each person is identifiable then 25mm/28mm is for you. You can see the face of each figure, give them names etc. And their are many beautiful figures made.

If you what to focus on unit leaders and still have machines then 15mm/18mm is the best scale. This is the road I have taken for over 25 years now. See: link

The cost is relatively low (figs, terrain, storage), you can mix in a large selection of Historic figures (more all the time) and there are even a few very good casters of VSF figures in this scale. I very much like the fact the the figures do not dominate the terrain in 15mm. This helps impart the feeling that you have a group of man in real danger doing something extraordinary.

There are some helpful hints on my website:

25/28mm, The One True Scale, or is that The Once & Future Scale

IUsedToBeSomeone12 Apr 2012 2:02 a.m. PST

18mm…

Mike

deflatermouse12 Apr 2012 2:03 a.m. PST

15mm Started using Space 1889 in 1989.

freecloud12 Apr 2012 2:40 a.m. PST

28mm….otherwise all those marvellous things are effectively invisible.

SonofThor12 Apr 2012 3:14 a.m. PST

For WTNW, 15mm but for G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. 28MM

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP12 Apr 2012 6:37 a.m. PST

Probably 25s, but I'm really tempted by all of the great stuff available in 15/18mm. I'm also very tempted to do something in 1/72 plastics, that way I get lots of figs for not lots of money.

SirFjodin12 Apr 2012 6:46 a.m. PST

15mm! You can get lots of armies and save money/space :)

nickinsomerset12 Apr 2012 7:48 a.m. PST

28 mm, as coming to Exeter Legionary 5 May,

Tally Ho!

pphalen12 Apr 2012 7:52 a.m. PST

25/28mm, since I started on GASLIGHT as an offshoot of my GRW gaming, so already was doing Weird ACW in the scale and just expanded with some colonials and others to fill out the genre (and then of course wnet all the way to pre-WWII, but that's anotehr story…)

laptot12 Apr 2012 8:33 a.m. PST

2 mm

corporalpat12 Apr 2012 9:29 a.m. PST

18mm Black Hat for me (mostly), but I have a handful of old 25mm Heritage for skirmish to which have been added some of the fine new Bronze Age figs.

Altius12 Apr 2012 9:32 a.m. PST

Don't play, but if I did it would be 28mm.

DLIinVSF12 Apr 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

25/28mm

Alfrik12 Apr 2012 10:08 a.m. PST

25/28 because I don't like to squint to see what my opponents figures are / paint jobs / details.

boy wundyr x12 Apr 2012 11:06 a.m. PST

Both 2mm (Land Ironclads) and 28mm (GASLIGHT).

pvernon Supporting Member of TMP12 Apr 2012 1:12 p.m. PST

25/28mm for me as well

Also Ancestral Hamster the RAFM "space 1889" figs are still available.

Lion in the Stars12 Apr 2012 1:41 p.m. PST

15mm on the ground, since that allows me to re-use all the terrain I have for other settings.

1/1200 or smaller for naval combat. (Problem with the world of Prester from Last Exile is that most capital ships are two thousand feet long, which makes for 20" models!)

DuckanCover12 Apr 2012 3:45 p.m. PST

I'm not involved with VSF gaming at any level or scale, but I think the whole genre would be most visually appealing in 25/28mm. I mean, when you look at some of the sculpts available…

2mm for Aeronef and Land Ironclads? Love this scale to

Ancestral Hamster13 Apr 2012 11:29 a.m. PST

@pvernon: Thank you for the heads-up. Another poster also PM'd me the info. It's good of both of you let me know. When I'm ready I can flesh out the Canal Martians properly.
(Have one box each of Victorian Adventurers and High Martians, and a mixed bag of Canal Martians from a friend who left the hobby.)

@Lion in the Stars: Saw the first Last Exile and thought it was great. Had no idea those capital ships were that big! I do want to see the LE sequel.

25/28 – Lots of non-SF Victorians to round out the scenes as well as lot of character pieces in that scale.

Lion in the Stars13 Apr 2012 10:13 p.m. PST

@DuckanCover: It does, but it also limits you to mostly human-scale VSF items.

If you want to do landships, or that steam spider from Wild West, you either reduce the monster or you have to use the monster as the table itself!

nickinsomerset13 Apr 2012 11:58 p.m. PST

Lion, depends on the size of table, my Ramshackle Steam Spider gets lost on my 12 x 6 table! The size and quality of the 28mm steam stuff is most impressive, and my £1.00 GBP steam train makes realistic noises!

Tally Ho!

Pole Bitwy PL14 Apr 2012 2:12 p.m. PST

1:72 and 1:600 for larger encounters.
