Mike Siggins, writing in Battlegames magazine, says:

Never sell anything you have painted

Do you agree?

dam040909 Apr 2012 6:50 p.m. PST

Yes I do.

John the OFM09 Apr 2012 6:54 p.m. PST

Easy for him to say.
I guess his house is paid for.

JSchutt09 Apr 2012 6:57 p.m. PST

No, not at all….

Before I do anything I make an agreement with myself, with whatever I decide, never to waste time on regret.

Gonsalvo09 Apr 2012 6:59 p.m. PST

Yep!

Ancestral Hamster09 Apr 2012 7:09 p.m. PST

No. If you have problems with regret, then only sell items you purchased with the intent to sell, or which you have been commissioned to paint.

John B09 Apr 2012 7:14 p.m. PST

Oh no! Regret! :)

I just sent my heavily weathered Battlefront Shermans link off for a consignment sale. Oh well… they were destined to be either sold or given to a friend.

Why I should hold on to an Aztec army I could never find opponents for when I had lost any interest in is beyond me.
After I sold them at a flea market, I happily bought more stuff I really wanted, and probably still have. Or not, but it's only "stuff".

Cheech and Chong never regretted selling their best weed, so…

Another Account Deleted09 Apr 2012 7:25 p.m. PST

After having done it before, I would agree with this now. :)

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian09 Apr 2012 7:33 p.m. PST

I'd have been dead of starvation years ago if I stuck to that bit of advice.

greatwhitezulu09 Apr 2012 8:07 p.m. PST

yes

No, I don't agree.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP09 Apr 2012 8:31 p.m. PST

Nope, I have done it a lot and never had any regrets.

Thanks,

John

what a todge walloper

BTCTerrainman Supporting Member of TMP09 Apr 2012 9:56 p.m. PST

No, I do not agree. In regards to figures, I sold some of my earliest figures that I painted, however I still have a lot. In fact, I have so many more figures painted by others in my collections (what I have painted is a small percentage these days). It is all about what makes you the happiest!

In regards to terrain, I have painted/sold so much including items that were some of my favorites. As long as I live, I can continue to paint more and find that my quality does improve with age!

Simply enjoy the hobby!

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER09 Apr 2012 10:24 p.m. PST

Sounds like poop in the pipes to me! Every thing is for sale, and everything has a price!
Except for the Granddaughter, but that's only till I get a spare in stock…

On occasion I've given stuff I've painted as gifts but I've not wanted to sell anything as yet. That may change over time though.

Tarty2Ts09 Apr 2012 10:59 p.m. PST

If I paint for me, it stays with me. Painting with selling in mind later down the track is a whole different thing.
Painting that ECW Royalist army……again…..because ( you fool ) shouldn't have sold the first one……. would be crap on a stick !!

Cardinal Hawkwood09 Apr 2012 11:24 p.m. PST

for me nothing is sacred if the price is right, or the car needs registering..Siggins is such a big girl's blouse..

Striker09 Apr 2012 11:26 p.m. PST

No.

Fat Wally10 Apr 2012 1:43 a.m. PST

I tend to sell stuff I haven't used in ages to fund new projects.

Whilst my painting improves and output is still good I don't mind selling stuff. I can replace it and it'll look better, plus some of the new figure ranges are nicer.

Timmo uk10 Apr 2012 2:14 a.m. PST

Have sold plenty in the past and have regretted some of those sales. Everything I have painted now is being kept even if some of it falls out of use over time.

Given up for good10 Apr 2012 2:35 a.m. PST

He must have more space that I do.

If I am not going to use it again (i.e. lost interest in the period / scale) out it goes – painted or not.

Doug em4miniatures10 Apr 2012 3:02 a.m. PST

No-one would want to buy anything I'd painted so not a problem….

No. I painted my first house. People also buy my paintings (trust me, no one is as surprised as me at that). Minis? A few. I mostly do wierd conversions, so people are either "What would I do with those?" or "Oh, dude, I gotta have those."

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP10 Apr 2012 3:51 a.m. PST

Since I've not painted anything in years, it's easy
for me to say 'No'.

Way back, I did paint 15's and have given away, but not
sold, some of those.

Also painted some 25's years ago and have given them
away as well.

Cornelius10 Apr 2012 4:08 a.m. PST

I am comfortably off: I would never sell anything I had painted.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP10 Apr 2012 4:31 a.m. PST

I've done it in the past but now I would keep anything I have painted.

Cherno10 Apr 2012 4:43 a.m. PST

I think one never can get as much money for a painted miniature as it's worth to oneself, so I agree. An unpainted miniature in it's box or blister is just something you bought, even if ultra-rare and OOP. But once it is painted, it is personalized and you have a connection to it.

Wargamer Blue10 Apr 2012 5:03 a.m. PST

Huge yes.

Sundance10 Apr 2012 5:19 a.m. PST

No.

Yesthatphil10 Apr 2012 5:21 a.m. PST

Broadly, yes ….

Cardinal Hawkwood10 Apr 2012 5:43 a.m. PST

actually I sold him stuff on eBay once, he was a bit tardy in paying was quite snooty when
I pressed him on the matter..

No.

ming3110 Apr 2012 6:12 a.m. PST

I know people who paint and sell to make money . Personally I do not . They are part of my collection and even if they never see another game I will always have them and remember the joy of painting them .

Fonzie10 Apr 2012 6:13 a.m. PST

Lol.. I would have about 100.000 painted figures now if I would do that. :-)

Better to conceive a few children and sell them.

haywire10 Apr 2012 6:47 a.m. PST

What is his reasoning?

Bashytubits10 Apr 2012 6:59 a.m. PST

Cardinal Hawkwood, what is a todge walloper?

TodCreasey10 Apr 2012 7:22 a.m. PST

3 year rule – if I haven't touched it in 3 years it is for sale.

Altius10 Apr 2012 7:30 a.m. PST

*derisive laugh*

No!

Sane Max10 Apr 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

If I hadn't sold stuff I would need to buy another home.

I do, bitterly, regret selling my Epic Tyrannids for Bleeped text all.

ah me.

Pat

JohnnyPainter10 Apr 2012 8:18 a.m. PST

I mostly give my stuff away or trade. Sometimes auction it for charity.

I don't think I've ever outright sold any of my work – but I might be tempted to. Mostly, I just like bartering for stuff. Selling it sort of ruins it as a hobby for me, it becomes "work"

Doug em4miniatures10 Apr 2012 8:19 a.m. PST

Cardinal Hawkwood, what is a todge walloper?

He may have missed the "r" off the end of todge, in which case, it means a meat-beater….grin I tried typing the todge word in full with an "r" and got a severe bleeping.

Doug

Stronty Girl Fezian10 Apr 2012 9:38 a.m. PST

As I frequently buy minis that look fun to paint but which I have no earthly use for after they are painted, quite a lot of those get sold when the shelves start to get crowded.

striker810 Apr 2012 9:41 a.m. PST

Question dear Editor, is this Mike Siggins character refering to selling out collections or is he just anti selling of anything you paint? I'm wondering what the contex of his statement is truely getting at.

Untill my question is answered I say sell what you want, when you want, for what ever reason you want, since most of us live in a free society at the moment and you're able to use your own free will. Just don't go thinking you're going to make money doing it.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP10 Apr 2012 9:52 a.m. PST

I am pretty well off, so I don't sell things I paint – but I have given lots of them away

Baggy Sausage10 Apr 2012 9:55 a.m. PST

Why is he telling me what to do with my stuff?

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Apr 2012 10:08 a.m. PST

Everything in my wargame hobby collection is for sale – at the right price.

I have sold many armies and reinvested the proceeds into something New & Shiny and I have very few regrets.

Also, when you run out of space, it is time to cull the herd.

Gabriel Landowski Fezian10 Apr 2012 12:07 p.m. PST

I painted my ex-wife and have no regrets getting rid of her….
