I've been dabbling in 1/1200 again, and built myself an H39 class – balsa and styrene. The Hindenburg is about to join the fleet. That's a Revell Tirpitz with a scratchbuilt hull in the background.
Note that I made a few revisions – I could not stand the thought of the hangers being near the aft turrets nor the catapult under the guns of turret Dora, so I reverted to the tried and true athwartship amidships arrangement. VSB |

Nice scratchbuild, I used to love balsa as a kid (7-10) and used to build (rough) models from reference material like Janes Fighting ships, this was before I ever knew what wargaming was. They never looked even 10% as good as yours and I usually never got round to painting them but me and a few friends used to have fun hunting the Bismarck, accompanied with explosion noises and cries of BOOM YOU'RE DEAD. I may have to roll that aspect of the hobby out once more, very encouraging to see such great results! |

I could not stand the thought of the hangers being near the aft turrets nor the catapult under the guns of turret Dora, so I reverted to the tried and true athwartship amidships arrangement. They were moved aft because about the last place you needed an aviaton fire was right smack amidships! |

Also, admidship planes really didn't work well. You get allot of strange cross winds. The reason ships got aircraft handling in this area for a period of time had more to do with the transition from coal to oil fired engines than the needs of the planes. When WWI ships made the switch in engines, the new arrangement left the area unused and available. Also guns were generally found to be useless in that position (limited fire arc combined with a magazine/engine room location conflict. While Bismarck was a new ship, it was actually a rather old design (A Bayern class WWI design) for the most part. |
