Zvezda make very nice models.

I am looking forward to it. I have a whole bunch of Zvezda that I can add to the game.

Is it true that the newer figures are a different size to their older Samurai ones?

bilsonius09 Apr 2012 5:12 p.m. PST

PSR states they are a couple of mm taller, but if you look at the comparisons at the bottom here they don't seem too far out, allowing for the thick base on the ashigaru:

Thanks Mike,

I know they're ugly brutes, but I think I'll stick with my Redbox Ashigaru. Once they're cleaned up and painted, they don't look too bad at all, and they will be a lot cheaper than paying the new prices. I may buy some of the commanders though…

That thicker base really makes them look taller than they are.

It's the price that is off putting. When I can get 44 figures for about £8.00 GBP, I really refuse to pay £3.00 GBP for 5 figures! (Or 2 cavalry figures!!!) It's a joke!

Brummie: I agree that the expansions are kind of expensive. 1/72 plastics for the same price as 28mm metals is a bit weird. I'm planning to buy the game and then play it with 6mm miniatures. Should work just as nicely.

Brummie Lad11 Apr 2012 5:57 a.m. PST

Setsuko,

I imagine the game would look pretty impressive in 6mm! I'm more a fan of Peter Pig's rules for the period, but like you, I will still probably buy the game! grin

Just got the first four mini-sets, out of curiosity; very nice sculpts, well engineered, and not all of them noticeably over-sized for 1/72. However, the weapons seem far too fragile for gaming.
The kits also include lots of useful spare sashimono, although Zvezda couldn't even be bothered to make them compatible with their other figures without drilling an extra hole. Honestly, is it just commercial stupidity on their part and a complete disregard for customers who have already built up a collection of their Samurai? Luckily I've got plenty of ashigaru from the old Shogun game.

Maybe it's actually an improvement in the attachment system compared to the old way?

Skeptic22 Apr 2012 7:41 a.m. PST

I wonder if the rules are going to become available separately?

The following two links were posted at Boardgame Geek. They are reviews of some of the figures for the forthcoming Samurai Battles game posted at Plastic Soldier Review.

This is a very exciting addition to the range of C&C based games. It is the second of the two I most wanted published. The first being Napoleonics.
