I haven't seen the TV show, but based on the books, what historical minis would you use to game this? What historical army would you use for each faction? I'm looking at 15mm, probably using Impetus rules. For example, Mongols for the Dothraki

Mainly WOTR English, with some viking/norwegian for the islemen. For the wildlings it could be hard to get low-tech types with enough cold weather gear. I would not use Mongol for the Dothraki, something more primative looking and from a warmer climate, maybe some dark ages hunnic types. Some later WOTR pike for the northern army. Phil |

The Seven Kingdoms appear to be a bit of a mixed bag, like most fantasy settings. I agree the Dothraki strike me as more Hunnic than mongol- they tend not to wear armor and even go into battle bare chested. For Westeros proper I agree that War of the Roses is a good fit, but I think anything from the 13th-15th century centuries would work. My (highly unscientific) take- Northerners- Scots Common Army or similar Westerlands- WOTR English, fewer longbow The Riverlands- WOTR English again seems like the best fit The Vale- haven't really seen these guys in action The Reach- HYW French, but knights have full plate The Stormlands- WOTR English (or mercenaries), or maybe a late continental force. Dorne- I'd go with something more Arabic or Turkish, but I'm not quite sure what. Iron Islands- actually a tough one since they are culturally 'viking' but appear to use the same equipment as everyone else. So maybe the same as the above but with less/lighter armor and little cavalry. Wildlings/Mountain Clans- cold weather barbarians, poor equipment = Ancient Germans? Night's Watch- These would be fantasy 'ranger' types Man, I really need to look at my own project for this- it has been on the back/back/back burner for a long time. -Will |

In the T.V. show, there is an awful lot of plate but that's probably for budget reasons – realistic-looking chain mail is expensive! One of the books introduces an army of eunuchs and I've always wondered what they would look like – maybe ancient Egypt? |

The Unsullied, almost forgot; I would use Macedonian pike or something similiar personally. A lot of the forces from Ghis/etc are very odd though. -Will |

Dorne sounds like Spain to me. |

For the unsullied, I would go for Egytian pike or similar, something with less equipment & probably less clothes than Macedonians. I got a more middle east vibe from Dorne than Spain, but I am not sure why. Bravos seems to be early renaisance Venice, possibly with Greek influence. Phil |

Saxons Dog's "Claymore Castings" for some "Northern" types? link CdlT |

For Dorne think southern Spain--maybe Andalusia--as it is clearly a mix of European and Arab/Turkish. The books talk about the people being a different race than the rest of Westeros, which would substantiate an Arab/Turkish influenced by western european or vice versa. |

Wow, LOVE those Claymore castings figures, I agree excellent Northerners if doing this project in 28mm. -Will |

unsullied would seem more Mameluke to me Dothraki don't seem to have the horsearchers that the mongols or huns have so I am hard pressed for a comparrison, maybe a Native American horse culture? |

Ser Jorah Mormont describes them using the bow from horseback, and by his description I think implies "horse-archer" type tactics. Still, finding an "exact" historical match is pretty pointless, some sort of hybrid taking characteristics from several nations/cultures would probably work better. CdlT |

War of the roses English for all the westeros. While the Dornish are clearly Spanish/ Italian complexions they seem to wear a nd fight in similar dress. Northerners to me are like Yorkshirmen and Northumbrians so they don't need to look to different. The Wildings are clearly Scots so any Viking/Pictish/Celty dark age looking figures would do. With thecHillmen I'd go with Fantasy Barbarians or Ancient Germans. Dothraki are tough. But maybe Turkopoles? |
