I'm contemplating grabbing some Shapeways models, spacecraft, probably in white, strong flexible material (nylon IIRC). I've seen some comments about it being porous, and soaking up paint. What's the best way to prep and paint it? |

I did mine the same as any other. Primed black and painted with acrylic. Never had an issue. Used the cheap white material, too. |

I use wal-mart brand flat black spray paint. Less than a Buck a can. I have some pics at my blog of the Irrational Miniatures line: doodlebot.net/redoubt/?p=306

The first ones I painted (white, strong, and flexible) without primer. The first coat was absorbed into the material and looked kind of cool. But too much white was coming through so I gave it a second coat. They look fine now. The second batch I gave a light coating spray of krylon gray first and it worked out great. Even got rid of the gritty texture of the material. |

Did you wash the model first like with resin? Or prime as is? |

I did them as is. The edges of some of my models were a bit flaky. So I trimmed them then sprayed. |

You wsh resin because of mold release. This is 3D printing, with no need for mold release. |

The FUD material (Frosted Ultra Detail) does seem to come with a waxy coating sometimes, I had some that had nothing, others were a pain to get rid of (warm soapy water, repeated). When they sat on paper to dry, you'd see the paper start to look like oil was dripping onto it where the mini was in contact with it. WSF is fine though. |

I received three models in FUD. Upon priming outside in the mild sun two started leaching an oily coating and the bprimer was an wet oily mess. One did not. I washed the two in Winston Brush Cleaner and reprimed without problem. So, there is a oil in the material that can work itself out of the mini. |

I ordered a bunch of spaceships from the Irrational Miniatures line several years back, including the big round beast there. I got them in Ultra Detail and they came to me with severe stair-stepping. As in, jagged lines. I took a rat-tail file and hobby knife to them and smoothed them as best I could, it took many hours. Then they were still a bit jagged, especially the curved surfaces, so I figured I would primer them with gesso to help smoothe them out. It wound up tooking about ten layers, each one taking a couple of days to dry. It was an extreme amount of work but the results were, in the end, pretty good. But I just can't bring myself to order more minis from Shapeways because of that awful experience. I hear they have a new process where they sumble the miniature in an ultrasonic polish bath to remove the stair-stepping… anyone have any knowledge of this? |
