What is your interest level in playing Pulp in a tournament setting? On a scale from 0 (no interest) to 10 (obsession). |

It would be hard to think of a genre less suited to tournament play. -0- |

Today's assignment. Make a tournament out of The Maltese Falcon. |

I want to play Joel Cairo. I do a great Peter Lorre! |

I like tournaments. I like pulp gaming. That would be an 8, I suppose. I can't see any reason why that genre would be less suited to tournament play. I've run 3 such events with Golgo Island which were great fun without the need of a GM, and there are also Pulp City tourneys afaik – and probably more
Pulp is a genre (not a ruleset or a game mechanic design) like fantasy, sci-fi and historicals. Stereotypes about tourneys, competition, and Pulp gaming are just that: stereotypes. Beyond that it's always the same story – it's a matter of players. Cheers,
Sylvain

0 ---Pulp is very subjective . It is rolyplaying in a mini's game enviroment . There is no hard a fast rules for who wins . |

10! And here is why: Pound your Opponent to a Pulp Victorian Science Fiction Tournament! Yes, you heard that right, a Victorian Science Fiction Tournament using the G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. Rules system. Players are to bring their protagonist and supporting cast to face all kinds of diabolical and demented schemes of evil-doers to thwart a global conspiracy! The Tournament will consist of each player (or TEAM of players!) competing against a game-master at each table to accomplish a specific mission! Each team will battle each table/mission in a four-round tournament! This is a pre-registration event ONLY – and to participate you must submit your Protagonist and supporting cast (Progatonists if a TEAM) to the tournament organizer one month prior to the event! The Protagonist and his team must be submitted with a suitable background story which will be published in advance on the website for the other participants to read! Here are the simple rules: 1. You must have all of your models PAINTED, Flocked, and based to participate and you must submit a photograph of each model (you can photograph them as a group) which must be submitted with your Protagonist list. 2. You must come prepared to play, have fun, enjoy each game and understand that sometimes LOSING is actually WINNING in Pulp gaming! 3. You must bring your own dice, tape measures, painted models, and your rosters for keeping notes. Prizes will be awarded on the following categories to be judged by the referees who shall review the applicants Protagonist listing, the painted models, and shall be scored on each scenario through a score card system. The following awards will be given, depending on the number of entrants and prize support available: Best Dramatic Death of a Protagonist Best Dramatic Death of Evil Minion Best Costumed Protagonist Player Best Storyline for the Protagonist and supporting cast Best Painted Protagonist(s) and supporting cast Most likely to set off a Negative Chain Reaction Of course this is a bit tongue in cheek, but I would certainly like to host one of these types of events at a convention – I think it would be a riot. Besides, it would give me and my Evil Minions incentives to finish up all of our Pulp goodness and prepare devious and diabolical plots to spring on unsuspecting Protagonists and supporting casts! Also, in this vein the competition isn't about WINNING – it is about having fun and doing it with style and panache! |

Tournaments are rarely about having fun. |
pphalen | 27 Mar 2012 5:47 p.m. PST |
Even when we had a GASLIGHT "Bring and Battle" we spent more time in awe of each others contructs and talking about how we built them

Tournaments are rarely about having fun. True, but they CAN BE, and that is what you are after – as pphalen said – the "shock and awe" of seeing other peoples stuff is most of the fun – gaming is just another part of the Pulp side of things! |

>>Pulp Victorian Science Fiction Tournament<< Not possible. The pulp era and the Victorian era are two different periods. It's like saying a 1940's American Civil War tournament. |
komradebob | 28 Mar 2012 7:14 a.m. PST |
Heh, didn't someone make a hack of A Very British Civil War that was a 2nd ACW set in the 1930s or 40s? Anyway, I think Jovian1 has the right of it, if one was trying to run a Pulp tournament. You'd need very much to change what "winning" meant in the context of play. It would certainly need to be more about being an MVP of some sort, probably spread over multiple categories (as suggested), than based on any actual tabletop victory as in another type of game. |

What if we add in Nazis and Dinosaurs? That makes it more pulpy, right? |
