In their Beginners Guide to Card Modeling, Fat Dragon Games recommends scoring all of the fold lines, before actually folding them. They suggest doing vertical lines first. How do you do it? * score before folding * score before folding, verticals first * fold without scoring * other * I don't build card models |

Some fold lines I score, some I don't – depends on the model and the situation. Doug |

I always score before folding, but the lines I score first depend on how the part is to be folded. |

I score the back, with a ballpoint pen. |

Score the part I am going to fold no matter of the orientation. I found doing all the folds first led me to miss bits and get some folds wrong. |

Always score before folding. I use one of the sculpting picks I have for it. |

Score before folding, so it folds where it ought to

Ballpoint pen sounds like a good idea. I use the back of an Xacto blade. Don't pay attention to vertical vs horizontal. |

I score, then fold. In no particular order. |

I score all the folds as I come to do them. As a tool I use an old XActo handle with a #11 blade from which I ground off the cutting edge leaving a smooth nicely rounded edge. BTW do not use a power grinder for this. The XActo blade may break with potentially hazardous results. I gound mine down using an old landscape brick fillowed by a whetstone to achieve a very dull but smooth blade. Only took about ten minutes. Al |

I work around the piece sometimes, other times I score vertical, then horizontal, then leaning one way, then the other--and then sometimes I just forget and start swearing. To me the important thing is to use a metal ruler and a tool for scoring. An empty ball point works great, but Michaels sells craft tools that are various size metal ball tips with wooden handles that work really well. I've also got an old scriber I got in the tools dept of Home Depot that works well. |

The purpose of scoring is to ensure that the fold when made is straight. Paper and card have a "grain". If you fold it in one direction (with the grain) it may well be fine. If you try and fold it in the perpendicular direction (across the grain) it won't go straight. Which way the grain runs is not always obvious, hence the need to score all folds. The thicker the material the greater the need for scoring. |

Sometimes I score them, sometimes I don't. I always use a straight edge to fold along and that makes the fold straight. |

Yep, I score them as needed. Thanks, John |

I always score. You're trying to "break" the natural grain of the paper, and after printing and cutting I have no chance of figuring out which way it wants to fold, or not. I use a table knife to etch my score marks. |

I score everything with an empty biro/ball-point pen. It doesn't break the surface as scoring with a blade does, thereby limiting the need to edge. It's also not neccessary to score reverse folds on the backside of the sheet. |

i rarely score anymore
now that I turned 53 she doesn't seem to have much interest anymore, so I just fold |

I score first and use a fine point ball point pen which I've emptied of ink. I don't usually have a particular direction I score first. I do tend to score all folds which are parrallel, or mostly parallel before scoring the ones perpendicular to them. I don't like using anything sharp as it tends to cut into the paper and make a weaker corner. |
Stephens123 | 24 Mar 2012 7:00 a.m. PST |
I use needle nose pliers of varying lengths. So do not need to score first. |

* score before folding I use a table knife to etch my score marks. Great idea. I am going to test this out tonight. Thanks. |
