Can someone recommend a decent range of 15mm and 28mm Xerxes' Persian army figures, please?

And, a preferred set of rules for the battles of Marathon through to Plataea 479 BC.

Many thanks in advance.

I use a variety of figs in my 28mm Persian army. You will need to use more than one manufacturer to get all of the nationalities in the army anyway. I use Old Glory, the Former Vendel figs (now carried by Sgt. Major's Miniatures,) Foundry, 1st Corp, Battle Standard, Wargames Factory and I think I even have some Essex figs in their too.

I have almost always used WAB for this. It works pretty well for the period if you get rid of the characters.

For 28mm, Captain, you might use Wargames Factory if you don't mind plastic. First Corps are probably my preferred range for Achaemenids. For lists and such clashofempires.co.uk

Aren't the former vendel figs a lot bigger than all the others you've listed, PS?

For 15mm, have a look at Lead Astray by TMP's Keraunos (who will I hope add advice over the figures).

I am currently working on some 30mm flats for the Society of Ancients' BattleDay (Plataea) in Bletchley at the end of the month (so no pictures available yet). I will be using an adapted version of Neil Thomas's AMW ..

But if you are interested in the topic you really ought to try to go. Plataea will be fought in every conceivable scale with (usually) at least a dozen sets of rules from traditional favourites like Armati or DBA, new kids like War and Conquest and alternatives like Lost Battles or Command and Colours. If there is an answer to your question, you'll find it there.

Check out the BattleDay Page on the website …

The classic castings for that army was put out by Minifigs UK. I have seen some Essex 15mm for EAP too.Does not Xyston make EAP?

They are much chunkier and probably wouldn't mix well with the others in the same unit. On the table top you don't really see much difference though in seperate units. Plus their Egyptians are a must-have.

figures advice.

(its funny, An Italian asked exactly the same question on my perferred rules email list over the weekend)

I went for 15mm, and mostly Xyston.

Khurasan do the best imortals and sparabara I could find – but there range stops there. their figures are scaled to fit with Essex, but I was not impressed by the essex range itself.

Additionally, I massively over-ordered from Khurasan since I failed to spot the number of figures per pack, which gave me the ability to pick the exact poses I wanted for front and back rank, and since my preferred rules allow double deep bases, I could put spara and spear men in front, and bowmen in back – leaving a ton of extra spara to resue in the rest of the army (very useful).

for the rest, pretty much all Xyston

I know their figures are for the later Alexandrer / Darius period, but if you ignore kardakes and takabara, then I'm happy to use all the other subject peoples as subject peoples from the earlier period. Having extra Spara helped me here, as did having a bunch of spare shields from all over the place – some Egyptian Marines shields added to Phoneician Marines figures gives a much better Assyrian looking chap, for example, and spare Spara added to some Persian Levies make an interesting robed figure (who deserves a better colour scheme than the one I gave them).

Another option is Minifigs 15mm range – they sculpts are a bit dated, but they look like they will paint up well, and they are the only guys who realy get into the vagiaries of the subjects as per Herodotus – but no images on their website, so its always a risk when you order sight-unseem.

The big question you have is always going to be which sort of Xerxes army list are you going to use.

Marathon to Platea gives three distinct choices, I think

marathon itself, which seems a pretty basic all Persian sort of army
Platea which is the same with extra greek hoplites (neither with imortals to be strict)
And the main invasion force, which is all unwilling subjects and interesting things to paint and the immortals.

As I found here, a huge number of guys on this site will only do Platea style with extra Imortals -so all the best infatry (Immortals, Sparabara and Greek Hoplites) and none of the rubbbish getting in the way – maximised options for a style of play which I fail to understand.

I went the other way, and got all the really crapy useless subjects – and as much variety as I could find within that.
- It was immensly more fun to prepare and paint, but a lot more thought had to go into the prep, and its not exactly a maximised competition army (although I did beat up a thracian army two weeks ago)

Yes you can find War & Conquest army lists free online at link
Details on the book itself here warandconquest.co.uk

We will be at the Society Battle day which I am looking forward to immensely as we have previously refought Plataea here link and here link

Figures wise, Scarab do the Greeks and Spartans, we have considered doing the Persian opposition to match as we finish the Greeks off, but there are a couple of options out there as others have already noted

kind regards

I have some of the Minifigs Persians in both 15mm and 25mm scale. I also have some Stronghold Miniatures 15mm Persians – not so easy to obtain these days, but very nice figures nevertheless.

Essex have the fullest list for EAP. They do figures like Ethiopians and Chalybians which add real variety to the army.

I too will be at the Society of Ancients Battle Day on 31st March. Its a real opportunity to see how several different rulesets tackle the same tactical problem. This year I am going to sit by the DBMM game and see how it works! For those of you who cannot be there it all gets written up in Slingsot afterwards.

I use Foundry and 1st Corps in 28mm. Good variation between both ranges and they mix well.

Keraunos23 Mar 2012 2:02 a.m. PST

I'm looking forward to that report, Lewis Gunner.

The comparison should be interesting.

Warlord have the ex Immortal Miniatures Greek and Persian ranges in 28mm. Some lovely figures – my favourites are the Immortals and the Midianite camel riders. They mix well with Foundry and 1st Corps. Before being taken over by Warlord Immortal were planning plastic Persians to compliment the metal ranges. Whether Warlord continue with these remains to be seen.

Old Glory do 28mm Persians which are very good and you get 30 of them to bag so great for bulk buying. I've bought them to fight my QT Greeks which tend towards large 25mm / 28mm.
