The role of the Nassau troops at Hougoumont was described in a report by Moritz Büsgen (the former Captain who commanded the troops), which some of you may know. However, his account of Quatre Bras has never been published (not in German or English), and so I place both items you all TMPers to digest and discuss. Thanks John

Interesting.

Is he saying that there was a French incursion into the Hougomont compound other than from the back gate?

He also seems to say that no British troops were inside the compound other than to counter-attack the incursion.

@GDrover,

Yes, indeed there were three incursions at Hougoumont, but each of these has – over time and with the usual embellishment that is part of the history of Waterloo – become embodied in the single incursion around 12.30 at the north gate.

During the second incursion, members of the Grenadier Company, 2nd Nassau (which Büsgen originally commanded as he had been elevated to the command of the battalion at short notice) and the Light Company of the 3rd Foot Guards under Captain John Elrington, expelled the French intruders. Little has been written about this previously.
