I'm doing naval bases using the crumpled floral paper method, and while I'm happy with the shape of the waves, I'm not sure what colours to use to paint it. I'm thinking a dark blue base, with a jade green drybrush followed by a lighter blue and then a light white drybrush for wake and wave tops. Thoughts? |

I use all Vallejo. 3 parts Dark Sea Blue, 1 part Deep Green, 1 part Ultramarine. Then I paint the waves/wakes Ivory and hit the tops of all of them with White. Then Gloss coat on all the blue areas and Matt on all the Ivory/White (if you've ever been out at sea, wave tops and wakes are not shiny like the rest of the surface is) |

I basecoat Vallejo Dark Sea Blue, them spot or speckle that with Vallejo Dark Sea Grey and Ceramcoat Green Sea, then dab the wake in white. |

I used Createx paints and Golden Heavy Body Gel or Extra Heavy Body Gel to create this sea scape, which I then dry-brushed lightly with white to get the white caps – I did not base the ships. link |

Well, the different oceans all have different colors. The pacific is a purplish deep blue (if you're talking deep water), for example. The Med is an awful lot lighter in color. |

Only just starting out into naval wargaming so am just experimenting. I like to have a cold, grey ocean look to my ship bases as I'm currently focussing on Battle of the Falklands (1914). I've been using a first wash of Vallejo deep sea green, followed by a wash of a royal blue* then a very light wash of flat green then follow up with dry brushing the waves. I base on a textured polystyrene sheet (think its meant to be an adobe wall) – but gives good 'ocean swell' effect IMHO. Some pics of the first bases I did: link (is Sydney vs Emden – the cold water look not so suitable for this theatre). *just because that's what I had – any mid blue. |

Thanks for the help guys. I eventually went for a Shadow Grey drybrush over Regal Blue (both GW paints on a mid-grey undercoat). |

It depends upon the colour of the sky. |

Well I live in the midlands, so an iron sea is pretty appropriate if the sky is the deciding factor =p link |

Even the North Sea, and the North Atlantic can be blue at times. |
