I thought you all might like to see a shot of part of the interior of the P-3b Orion. This image is taken just aft of the overwing exit hatches, and facing forward. In the foreground are the two acoustic sensor stations, ready to go. They are labeled SS-2 and SS-1, respectively, with SS-2 closer. the SS-2 was the junior acoustic sensor operator, with SS-1 the senior. There are 5 stations in order here. From closest to furthest, they are, SS-2, SS-1, Tacco, Navigator, and SS-3. The SS-3 was the non-acoustic sensor operator and handled the radar, FLIR, ESM, MAD & BT sensors. The seats are in the stowed position. They rotate 360 degrees, slide along the rails shown, can lean backward quite aways, and shift forward and backward on their frame. This is also the position for take-off and landing, facing aft, strapped in, etc. I always preferred this arrangement for the tactical crew. It allowed us to pass notes easily when the ICS was busy, and to more or less see each other's readouts when needed without getting out of our seats. The area under all the stations had radiant heat floor panels to help keep your feet warm. The inside temp was usually around 52degrees F to keep all the electrical systems happy. That also made for a great place to nap during the often 2-hour transit to the onstation point. link |

This is an image of the SS1/2 positions on the P-3C Update III birds. Note the new glass interface panels. It's located in the same position as the original pic I posted. The seats are, however, very much a dark orange and NOT a red color.

Okay, back to the P-3B The pic below is the TACCO (Tactical Coordinator) station and the Navigator's station. The TACCO is to the left, the Nav to the right. Note the two acoustic sensor stations to the far left. This shows how the crew sat side by side, facing out over the port wing.

Very cool stuff. Thanks! This may be a stupid question, but what the hell – on the flight station picture, I cannot see any rudder pedals. Are there none, or are they just out of frame? Doug |

They are there. The rudder pedals also have the brake pedal attached to them, so they're important. The pedals seem to be blended into the background due to the colors/shadows.angle etc. I'll have some more pics as I can locate them of the ordnance station, galley, etc. FWIW, the deck was covered with a dark grey non-skid material throughout the aircraft, and for all variants. Most all of the metal components and walls are painted a haze grey color. The shades might vary just slightly if some piece of equipment was replaced, but overall, unless you're up close you wouldn't notice it. The rest of the overhead, walls, etc, was either a pale green color, almost a washed-out pea green, or a pale buff yellow color, sort of a faded tan. Plus, the entire length of the tactical crew area has a rail overhead on the starboard side as a handhold to use when walking, just in case of turbulence of maneuvering. Much like the handrails on a trolley, subway car, etc. |

You will have to forgive the old bubblehead for *still* cringing every time he hears a C130 or P3 roar overhead
I'm surprised the USN hasn't funded a submerged-launch SAM yet, just the thing to deal with those annoying airedales! |
