I'm looking for a source for clear plastic disks for 1/300 scale helicopter rotors. to display in flight. I've seen them used here on member aircraft but can't find where to buy them.

Thank You

Take a look at scrapbooking supply stores. You can usually find circle punches from 1/8" up to 2" in diameter. Then all you need is some clear plastic sheets from an office supply store.

We can supply clear plastic disks like the one below cut to your specification:

I didn't have any helicopters on-hand when I made this one, but hopefully you get the general idea!

You can contact us via our website hurlbat.co.uk or email us sales [at] hurlbat [dot] co.uk

Hurlbat Games your disk looks a bit thick for 1/300 rotors, how thick is it?

Hurlbat Games09 Mar 2012 10:53 a.m. PST

The example above is 1mm thick but we can get the same material in other thicknesses – this was just a quick experiment to see roughly what they would look like :)

OK, I just checked and we can get definately get the same material in 0.50mm and 0.75mm thicknesses. I think that 0.25mm would be too thin.

If there is interest in these then I'll dig out some helicopters in different scales and make some better examples :)

How large can you make these? I'm interested in getting some for my 15mm helicopters.

what would the cost be for your disks?

Hurlbat Games09 Mar 2012 12:48 p.m. PST

We can make disks up to about 11" / 28cm in diameter but anything over about 5.5" would be quite wasteful in terms of material.

As a very rough indication of prices I would think something like:

Pack of 3x 6" diameter, 1mm thick @ GBP 6.00
Pack of 4x 5.5" diameter, 1mm thick @ GBP 6.00
Pack of 10x 2" diameter, 0.75mm thick @ GBP 3.00
Pack of 20x 1" diameter, 0.50mm thick @ GBP 3.00

Shipping shouldn't be too expensive as the material is very light and I'm sure that we could come up with a special deal for our fellow TMP members!

We could cut pretty much any combination of overall diameter; diameter of central hole and thickness of material.

I'm sure that the lines for the rotor effect could probably be improved too so we'll have a play around and post some better pictures early next week.

Any feedback on the prices and sizes that would work well for different scales would be really appreciated.

So i assume 0.5mm rigid at 1" diameter? Would these be a ballpark guide for bespoke diameters (suppose that a 1.4 or 1.6 diameter is required for the rotor size-would youjust adjust the number of rotors to make a £3.00 GBP pack? I dont have a specific rotor/model in mind, but given that i have a list of Vietnam and Iran-Iraq war helos on the to do list, i will be getting around to a few different models in due course.

The 2" and 1" ones would be great for 1/300th scale helos – maybe even a 1&1/2" as well.

Not sure it'd be worth cutting the hole as that's quite easy to do, and some models may not have a central spike anyway?

A pack of 10 is a lot of helos, but for £3.00 GBP I'd buy it even if I only needed a couple (which incidentally I do – hence finding this thread on Google!).

Maybe a mixed pack of 10 disks of varying sizes might work better for 1/300th as people may well be replacing rotors for a mix of helos in their army ?

I was about to ask something about this. I don't believe a pack of 10 various discs would serve any purpose due to the fact that, when I finally get around to buying some choppers, knowing my luck I would find none of the discs are the right diameter…
Much better to have some standard size packs and allow for custom orders.
