Howdy,

Earlier this week, I finished James Arnold's The Moro War (2011). I recommend it; prior to reading it all I knew of this chapter in history was it led to the Colt .45 Automatic. The subtitle for the book is "How America Battled a Muslim Insurgency in the Phillipine Jungle, 1902-1913."

Arnold presents a very readable, matter of fact history. I bought my copy thru Amazon. Wish I was going to Cold Wars where Arnold is scheduled as a special guest. He has serveral presentations scheduled.

I'm now looking forward to reading his book on the Friedland Campaign of 1807. It's currently in the No. 2 slot on the list after David Weber's newest Honor Harrington book. Looks like good reading in the next couple of weeks.

Ponder on,

JAS

Ponder,
Thanks for the heads-up on Arnold's book. My wife hails from the northern, mainly Catholic, region of Mindanao and this has given me a keen interest in Philippines history. Her side of the family now tease me that I know more about the history of their country than they do.

I recently visited an Masonic Lodge in the area. After the Lodge was closed we were in the hallway talking when I noticed a display case in a room.

It was a huge glass case with 8 Kris swords inside. As I looked at them, there was another case with 1/2 dozen revolvers from the period with Moro machettes. On the back wall was a display case with 6 Moro spears.

Seems that a Masonic Brother, long gone, was a Major during the fighting and brought these back to the States early in the 20th Century. He gave them to his lodge and they have maintained them since.

Howdy,

I liked but was disappointed by A Rising Thunder, the latest Honor Harrington book.

The first half of the book got up to the end of the last book, and in the second half there was no climax to the story.

I am enjoying Arnold's Friedland book.

Howdy,

I just finished Arnold's Napoleon's Triumph about the Friedland Campaign. Highly recommended, excellent book, and very readable.

Ponder on,

JAS
