In Battlegames magazine, Mike Siggins resolves: Try not to buy quite so many figures, books, and rules. Are you trying to cut back on your hobby expenditures? |
Sane Max | 05 Mar 2012 9:09 a.m. PST |
Nope, not in the least. Why is Mike suggesting it? I , for one, am not affected by the recession – If I lose my job I will be, but until then my income is the same. Pat |
x42brown | 05 Mar 2012 9:12 a.m. PST |
No. Painting time regulates my figure buying rather than money. I'm not sure what regulates my book and other stuff but it does not seem to be money. No concious attempt to cut back from me. x42 |

Since I'm currently unemployed, I'm definitely cutting back on hobby spending. Food and shelter win out over the Perry twins every time. |
ataulfo | 05 Mar 2012 9:14 a.m. PST |
Yes, this year is the first of, well I don't recall, that I'm seriously cutting the budget
Only bought 8 minis so far

yup, trying to sell off my GW stuff, keep a few skimish 28's and go 15mm for the rest of my games. |

Nope, trying to buy more – and paint more, but I can still buy books! |
ming31 | 05 Mar 2012 9:49 a.m. PST |
I buy what I can afford . or until my money runs out |
Altius | 05 Mar 2012 9:57 a.m. PST |
When things are tight, I do. I typically put my hobbies as the last thing that gets paid. But the economy has been getting better, and, frankly, I'm making more money right now than I have in years. My spending habits have been reflecting that, and I've been buying lots of lead the past several months. If things go bust, I'm back on the wagon. |
Who asked this joker | 05 Mar 2012 10:01 a.m. PST |
I am at the point where I buy what I need. I am not inclined to start new projects at this point. I've been cutting back on Miniatures purchases for 3 years running. I will be buying a couple of Battalions of Minifig Brunswickers. I may buy a few boxes of 1/72 scale fantasy figures. That probably it for this year. Books and PDFs are my main weakness. I am at the point where I am not impressed with the actual quality of new games. I have my favorites old and new but for the most part, not a lot of interesting games on the horizon. |
Frederick | 05 Mar 2012 10:08 a.m. PST |
Probably about the same – actually, money is not a major limiting factor – time and space are more problematic! |
Nowami | 05 Mar 2012 10:08 a.m. PST |
It's a simply question of time and motion. At my time of life and with my painting output I'll be dead before I finish what I've already got. Anything else will just be lining for the coffin. |
Striker | 05 Mar 2012 10:16 a.m. PST |
I've been cutting back since the middle of last year. Money and time (like Gaz). |
21eRegt | 05 Mar 2012 10:19 a.m. PST |
No, in fact having come into an inheritance I'm actually loosening up the normally well knotted purse strings. |
20thmaine | 05 Mar 2012 10:27 a.m. PST |
Yes – but for space rather than financial reasons. I can hardly get in the games room and there's not enough room to sit at the painting table – which rather defeats the purpose. |
DisasterWargamer | 05 Mar 2012 10:39 a.m. PST |
Book budget is about the same – trying to limit new figures – but with blue moon 15s having a hard time resisting |
Charles Marlow | 05 Mar 2012 10:43 a.m. PST |
Yes, I've been trying to buy less and only pick-up items that will move existing projects forward. It's nothing to do with economics, rather, it just seemed like a rational experiment to try for a change instead of the traditional unplanned impulse buying and endless starting/stopping of new projects
it's been working well for the last three months or so but recently I've been considering placing a pre-order for one of the Mantic Corporation army deals. |
TodCreasey | 05 Mar 2012 10:44 a.m. PST |
Not a cutback but a refocus. If anything I spend more as I am more willing to get things done for me. |

Mako11 | 05 Mar 2012 10:58 a.m. PST |
Forced to, sadly, due to lack of money. |
jdpintex | 05 Mar 2012 11:09 a.m. PST |
Nope. Cutting back is just plain silly. Although my unpainted backlog does impact my purchases somewhat. |
Parzival | 05 Mar 2012 11:15 a.m. PST |
Yes, for various reasons. But I've got an ample supply of miniatures now, so it's more of a shift to needs such as painting and terrain, which are for me less costly overall than the figures themselves. |
Inkpaduta | 05 Mar 2012 11:15 a.m. PST |
Yes, I am going to try to buy less this year. Cost is a fctor as is room and time to paint them all up. |
Atomic Floozy | 05 Mar 2012 11:18 a.m. PST |
I've been cutting back the last couple of years. Have given away or sold almost everything I had in 15mm. Will be selling off a lot of 28mm later this year. I've discovered that while I'm interested in a lot of periods and genre, I only game in a few so I'm clearing out things that I once thought I would play, but never will. |
epturner | 05 Mar 2012 11:27 a.m. PST |
I took several financial hits here. Cleaning out a few things, mostly giving away. Spending is way down and will be for the forseeable future. Eric |
Jamesonsafari | 05 Mar 2012 11:28 a.m. PST |
yep. I have been spending a little more but food shelter and car expenses seem to keep eating into the hobby money. I'd like the new Perry stuff, but the wife needs new glasses too. |
WarWizard | 05 Mar 2012 11:35 a.m. PST |
Short answer, not really. Long answer, Just trying to focus more. Used to buy everything but now I realize I am not getting anything done. So although I would like to start a 28mm WWII Marines in the pacific, or WWI Great War project, I am only going to focuse on 3 of my main projects for this year, in the hopes at least one of them will get completed. So only buying for somthing already underway! |
cepammi | 05 Mar 2012 11:44 a.m. PST |
Hope to retire next year, so I am stocking up. Once I retire things will be tight. |
nazrat | 05 Mar 2012 11:46 a.m. PST |
As always, I will buy what I want. This year spending is WAY up, but that's partially because I have sold parts of my different collections that have been unused for a long time to invest in other stuff I want to game with now. |
VonBlucher | 05 Mar 2012 11:49 a.m. PST |
Purchasing is up this year and last only because I've sold so much older projects off, that I will never get to in my lifetime. |
wrgmr1 | 05 Mar 2012 12:00 p.m. PST |
I spent a lot of money last year and have lots of figures to paint, thus I will not be spending a lot this year, only essential items. |
redbanner4145 | 05 Mar 2012 12:07 p.m. PST |
I'm the same cheapskate I've always been. |
doug redshirt | 05 Mar 2012 12:11 p.m. PST |
Trying to only buy stuff that will actually get painted. There are lots of figures I want to buy, but I stop and think if they help me finish current projects first. I amreally trying to finish off two armies so that I can play "Maurice" when it comes out. Then it's back to working on the 2nd Iranian War. |
Titchmonster | 05 Mar 2012 12:21 p.m. PST |
Yes, as I was reorganized out of a job in January. My budget is only for consumables like paint, ink or glue and minimal at that. I have several 1000's of unpainted mini's so no loss there. My time to paint has greatly improved with several hours each day being free so I am making a dent. Now, if I can land a job while I have severence then HELLO!! Historicon!!! |
Doctor X | 05 Mar 2012 12:23 p.m. PST |
Nope, not cutting back. I only buy what I need. Last year it was $2,500 USD worth of 20mm WW2. The year before it was maybe a few books. I guess I have a high level of fire discipline. |
timlillig | 05 Mar 2012 1:17 p.m. PST |
I should cut back a little, but mainly because I've bought a bit much recently and painted too little. |
nudspinespittle | 05 Mar 2012 1:31 p.m. PST |
I keep telling myself I should cut back. I have way too many models and too little time these days to paint (my favorite part of this hobby), let alone ever game. But when it comes to new, shiny models, I have OCD. I've been wrestling with this a lot lately, so maybe I'm on the right track to adjusting my mindset and just enjoying what I already have. Maybe. |
JRacel | 05 Mar 2012 2:00 p.m. PST |
I suffer from "New Shiny Syndrom". I don't see cutting back until I have to since I can afford it for now and it's the only thing I seem to enjoy much these days to keep me somewhat sane. While my wife is not thrilled, even she will ask when I am in a slump due to the office, "aren't there some figures you wanted to buy?" All in all, I'll buy what I want until I can't do that anymore or I no longer enjoy it. Jeff |
Fat Wally | 05 Mar 2012 2:04 p.m. PST |
I'm coming to the end of my latest project, the Wars of the Roses in 15mm, and there are no plans to add anything else significant to the collection this year. I have two armies on the lead pile waiting to be painted before I dare commit to any new projects. |
vdal1812 | 05 Mar 2012 2:06 p.m. PST |
No. I'm trying to be more selective. I'm trying to move away from buying everything to concentrating on two or three projects for the year. But I'm not spending any less because of any economic pressure. Should I cut back, probably, can I, probably not. |
Redcurrant | 05 Mar 2012 2:25 p.m. PST |
Yes – I will cut back a lot on the purchase of figures, I have far too many and it will take many years to get them painted – even by outsourcing. I will also cut back on the purchase of books as well. Steve J |
Grizzlymc | 05 Mar 2012 2:42 p.m. PST |
What is he trying to do? Save the planet? Silly oaf, wargaming is one of the cheapest hobbies imaginable. |
Col Durnford | 05 Mar 2012 2:46 p.m. PST |
For the first time in years I can see the bottom of the major project lists. I still have tons of minor projects. I'm adding to the collection on a very selective basis. When I was younger I had plenty of time for the hobby and not much money to spend on it, today it is reversed. |
arthur1815 | 05 Mar 2012 3:41 p.m. PST |
Quitting a job that was driving me into clinical depression, spending several months unemployed and now working part-time for much less money means I now try to spend as little as possible – other things have priority – and I have sold many books and games I realise I will probably never use again. Strangely, I feel liberated by disencumbering myself of so many possessions
|
Kropotkin303 | 05 Mar 2012 4:02 p.m. PST |
I find that the more and more I am getting into HOTT and I guess DBA for more historical stuff that 24 points puts a cap on things.I just want more armies :) |
Cardinal Ximenez | 05 Mar 2012 4:20 p.m. PST |
Fewer but more expensive purchases. Lower spend overall. |
Willtij | 05 Mar 2012 4:28 p.m. PST |
I have had to cut back over the past 5 years because of money problems but came to realize I didn't need so much "stuff" and that I could do more with less (and find creative [less expensive] ways to do it too). |
Grelber | 05 Mar 2012 7:50 p.m. PST |
I'm not really cutting back. I hope to buy the remaining figures for several projects this year, then not buy figures next year, while I try to catch up with my painting. Books? Last year with the Borders chain going out of business, I really stocked up. Long term? Retirement is 6-7 years out, and I want to hit that mark with projects to work on, so aside from next year's moritorium, I have no plans to cut back. Grelber |
