Connard Sage23 Feb 2012 8:38 a.m. PST

As my Supporting Membership has been rescinded, I can't reply to you. If you have my email addy, use that. If you don't, try carrier pigeon. Or WD3.

To the bloke who rescinded my Supporting Membership (that'll be Bill, for the hard of thinking): thanks for persuading me to do something more useful with the money I would have spent on the re-up fee. It seems that abusing a nasty little would-be eugenicist who believes that any person who doesn't reach his arbiters of functionality should be terminated is sufficient to render one persona non grata. The nasty little would-be eugenicist of course remains unmolested and unmuzzled. A lesson learned about where The Editor's favours lie.

I'll probably get a(nother) banning for the above, so adieu all from Connard Sage. My aliases live on.

anleiher23 Feb 2012 9:00 a.m. PST

Are you saying that because of a third party complaint, your Supporting Membership was cancelled?

If so, I didn't even realize that was possible.

epturner23 Feb 2012 9:01 a.m. PST

Dear Connard;
I am sorry to hear that. You have my best and should you depart I would miss your wit.

Eric

I guess you were not 'normal' enough connard. It may not be right, but you can only speak your mind if you agree with the others…..

will we see you over at Frothers?

Connard Sage23 Feb 2012 9:11 a.m. PST

Thank you Eric. I suspect you are in the minority though grin

will we see you over at Frothers?

I have been known to drop in occasionally. Keep an eye on Dogbert ;)

Are you saying that because of a third party complaint, your Supporting Membership was cancelled?

I'm saying that because of a spat in the Lounge, my Supporting Membership was cancelled. At least, I assume that was the reason. No communication has been forthcoming from His Nibs.

If I'm sounding like a whiny victim here it's because I'm feeling pretty Bleeped texting hard done by. I realise that standing by one's principles may have consequences, but being shafted by a Bleeped text like Wolfprophet comes hard.

I hope you are wrong. Generally your posts make a good deal of sense.

I hope that you eventually come back Connard Sage. I for one will miss your sharp wit and ability to puncture the balloons of the pompous. Both are something that we need around here from time to time.

Cheers Connard. You're an increasingly rare voice of European sanity round these parts (ooh er) and will be missed.

But you're probably off, yes.

anleiher23 Feb 2012 9:22 a.m. PST

I too shall miss your ability to ruffle the self important.

As a public service announcement, I would like to note that homogeneity is noxious. We shouldn't all think alike and we don't have the right to not be offended.

While I might not agree with some of the things you say, you like the John OFM are quite entertaining. Do hang around as much as possible.

thanks for persuading me to do something more useful with the money I would have spent on the re-up fee

I agree with much of what you are saying. Every once in a while I think about a supporting membership and then I end up in the Dawghouse for some rather arbitrary reason.

The DH rules make no sense and it's like being told "don't speed" but you never know what the speed limit actually is.

So Bleeped text that, I'll just buy miniatures instead and let the market decide.

Frothers Did It And Ran Away23 Feb 2012 9:33 a.m. PST

I wish people would have the decency to include links when referring to amusing spats so the rest of us can gawp while having our afternooin cup of coffee.

Connard Sage23 Feb 2012 9:35 a.m. PST

I can't provide a link, because the thread is in the lounge, and I'm not allowed in the Lounge any more. See?

Perhaps someone else could do the honours?

JJ, email on the way.

As my Supporting Membership has been rescinded, I can't reply to you.

Really? I thought you could reply to old messages, but just couldn't initiate new PMs.

It seems that abusing a nasty little would-be eugenicist who believes that any person who doesn't reach his arbiters of functionality should be terminated is sufficient to render one persona non grata.

No, but taking a private discussion from The Lounge and posting it on another website is against Lounge rules, and gets your Supporting Membership withdrawn.

The nasty little would-be eugenicist of course remains unmolested and unmuzzled.

He was Dawghoused at the time for using inappropriate language.

Space Monkey23 Feb 2012 9:48 a.m. PST

I hope Connard stays around too… he's my favorite breath of sanity on this site now that Allen Curtis is gone.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer23 Feb 2012 9:52 a.m. PST

it can't be linked that I am aware of, plus it's one of those topics that is best buried – after having a stake through it's heart, it's head cut off, garlic and silver and holy water used to embalm it, then nuked, the remains sent into the sun, and even then I'm not so sure.
Things were said that were not nice or at least badly phrased and it was a pricky subject, and it went from bad to worse.

Connard Sage23 Feb 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

Really? I thought you could reply to old messages, but just couldn't initiate new PMs.

You thought wrong. You also thought wrong when you decided not to bother informing me of the below. As I can't get in the Bleeped text Lounge I wasn't going to be able to read this

TMP link

was I?

No, but taking a private discussion from The Lounge and posting it on another website is against Lounge rules, and gets your Supporting Membership withdrawn.

It wasn't a private discussion, it was a single post. There was no context, comprenez 'context'? If you really want to start a flame war between TMP and TRC, bring it on. I know where my money sits. Would you like me to post the outside link here so the whole of TMP can make its own mind up?

I'm not often angry. I'm especially rarely angry over stupid Bleeped text on teh internetz, but you have succeeded with your usual high-handedness, posturing and support of Bleeped texts in raising my ire.

Well done you.

John the OFM23 Feb 2012 10:00 a.m. PST

Said Lounge thread should have been nuked as soon as it got vicous and out of hand. And that was very soon. What is the point of being an Editor if you do not exercise arbitrary and capricious Editorial judgement? What good was accomplished by allowing that thread to continue?
The main target of CS's bile was rambling on in a rather despicable vein. HE is the one I would terminate if it were up to me. HE is the one to bring the Lounge into disrepute.

So to be fair, either rescind Connard's punishment, or throw the Despicable one out too.

I will not reveal the topic of conversation, except to say that a comment was posted that could offend the sensitive, The Despicable One took it and ran with it, being totally obnoxious, and CS called both on it.
I might also point that all three were in violation of the terms of decorum we have come to expect from the Lounge, and CS sufferred an appropriate DHing. But expulsion?
BTW, the Despicable One got a DH also. That should have been the end of it.

I should point out that I avoided that thread out of distaste, but here it gets thrust in our faces agan, so I went back to see what the problem was, and that is 15 minutes I couold have spent better.

Frothers Did It And Ran Away23 Feb 2012 10:14 a.m. PST

Found the thread. It's pretty dull stuff. I was hoping for another "Editor you are dead to me" scenario.

Richly deserved, but a different offence altogether.

…it seems that advocating eugenics does not count as politics around these parts.

I find it odd that people believe in free speech… until someone says something they don't approve of.

It looked like a philosophical discussion to me, not political.

If you really want to start a flame war between TMP and TRC, bring it on.

And goodbye to Connard Sage, his account is now Locked.

Ken Portner23 Feb 2012 10:42 a.m. PST

Yawn. So tired of these "I'm leaving, goodbye' rants.

Don't you all have anything better to do?

Altius23 Feb 2012 10:49 a.m. PST

Rescinded and now locked? That seems harsh. Connard, you've been one of my favorite posters on this site, and a big reason why I come here. Hope to see you around, in one form or another, on one site or another.

…a **** like Wolfprophet

Duly noted.

John the OFM23 Feb 2012 10:50 a.m. PST

"Free speech" has never been free.
See how what one says gets your account locked? grin

"Free speech" is one of those things that means whatever you want it to.

"Free speech" only applies to governments, and even then it is limited.

Seeing how a thread is going to tear apart the menbership is an occasion for decisive Editorship. "Editor" does not come from the Latin for "just ignore harmful things and hope they go away".
Sometimes it might even be necessary to nuke things you AGREE WITH.

I have ALWAYS been in favor of The Editor using his discretionary powers to nuke threads that can impinge on his ability to make money. Allowing threads, and having policies, that drive people away does nothing for the bottom line.

I have ALWAYS been in favor of The Editor usiong his discretionary powers to nuke threads that can impinge on his ability to make money. Allowing threads, and having policies, that drive people away does nothing for the bottom line.

That's the point: discretionary powers.

I could have used those powers to DH you, John, for your "Polack" post the other day. Sure, you were quoting Shakespeare. Do you know how many Polish members of TMP quit that day?

Nor do I think we want to make a rule against everything that could possibly offend someone.

My expectation of TMP members is that they come here as adults, and act as mature people. Sometimes, that means not wetting yourself if someone says something you don't like. I'm not sympathetic to "Mommy, mommy, the bad man said something I don't like, make it go away!" type complaints, especially if no forum rules have been broken.

Connard Sage's problem is that he sanctimoniously decided that someone else shouldn't be allowed to talk on the forums, then decided to "shame" that person by posting what he had written – in the privacy of The Lounge – onto another website. His pitiful little excuse is that he didn't quote the entire discussion – oh, give me a break!

Rescinded and now locked? That seems harsh.

Really? I've given Connard Sage multiple "second chances" over the years, and he keeps proving that he can't "play well with others."

Cyclops23 Feb 2012 11:08 a.m. PST

Connard could be a complete arse on occasion but in this I'm on his side. There any number of things I'd see him getting locked for (not limited to getting on my Bleeped text) but not this.

No, how many?
Why not then nuke the whole thread?
Reading the edited title was like watching "Blazing Saddles" on the Family Movie Channel, with all of the "offensive" language bleeped. It sounds like the whole cast has a speech impediment.

Wouldn't have mattered – they quit before I could do anything about it.

John the OFM23 Feb 2012 11:20 a.m. PST

I guess I had better not start any threads about Sidney Pollack, the film director…

Nor should I mis-spell Pollock when talking about fish…

You all know, of course, that John's beloved Luzerne County is home to two main groups, The Irish (God love them) and The Polish/Ukranians. Can't swing a perogie without hitting a Kostichak, a Lubinski, a Pinchorski…

I know. I had a platoon of motor transport operators from there back the day when I was younger, thinner, fitter, and played Tactica and Johnny Reb…

What is TRC?

John the OFM23 Feb 2012 11:36 a.m. PST

You are leaving out the Italians.

John the OFM23 Feb 2012 11:38 a.m. PST

Nothing to see. Move along.
The guy who advocates eugenics and/or genocide is back in good standing, a Trusted Member, and the guy who called him on it gets the boot.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

LeadLair7623 Feb 2012 11:42 a.m. PST

I was wondering what TRC was too.

A Twiningham23 Feb 2012 11:45 a.m. PST

Anyone care to let me know what TRC stands for? If CS hangs out there it sounds like it might suit me.

darthfozzywig23 Feb 2012 11:45 a.m. PST

Privacy? On the internet? There's no such thing. Once you post it, it's out there for people to copy/paste/fold/spindle/mutilate. Do I like that? No, but my preferences don't really matter.

Sometimes, that means not wetting yourself if someone says something you don't like. I'm not sympathetic to "Mommy, mommy, the bad man said something I don't like, make it go away!" type messages.

But that's exactly why you banned him: he said something you don't like on an entirely different site. :)

Really? I've given Connard Sage multiple "second chances" over the years, and he keeps proving that he can't "play well with others."

Yeah, I do think it seems harsh. Connard's snarky remarks are mild compared to what's freely accepted elsewhere on the internet. That's not saying that we need to have a verbal free-for-all, but I think the line that you're drawing is a bit narrow. Yeah, I know, I know… Bill's House, Bill's Rules, but does anyone else feel like we have to walk on eggshells to avoid saying something that offends someone else? It's ridiculous. You're driving out some of the best (IMO) posters in favor of the most thin-skinned.

Monstro23 Feb 2012 11:55 a.m. PST

TRC is a motorcycle forum as far as I'm aware.

'but does anyone else feel like we have to walk on eggshells to avoid saying something that offends someone else? It's ridiculous'

Its the random petulance of the 'someone' that comes across more than any reason I can discern.
There may indeed be rules, they apply to some more than others and the ones that trip you up are the ones seem so selectively applied.

'I find it odd that people believe in free speech… until someone says something they don't approve of.'

I laughed and laughed at the above reference to free speech, oh the irony!

Plynkes23 Feb 2012 12:15 p.m. PST

It's a real good thing you did. A real good thing. And tomorrow… tomorrow's gonna be a… real good day!

Space Monkey23 Feb 2012 12:50 p.m. PST

does anyone else feel like we have to walk on eggshells to avoid saying something that offends someone else?
Yep, it's what this place is getting to be known for. A safe haven for the tea cozy crowd.

You're driving out some of the best (IMO) posters in favor of the most thin-skinned.
Yep to that too… if someone like Wolfprophet is the idea of a valued member while Connard and AECurtis get the shove.

Martin Rapier23 Feb 2012 12:59 p.m. PST

"I wish people would have the decency to include links when referring to amusing spats so the rest of us can gawp while having our afternooin cup of coffee."

It really wasn't very pleasant at all.

I don't know if Wolfprophet really was playing devils advocate or whether he was using the thread as an excuse to give us the benefit of a load of nasty racial supremacist clap trap. I think many of us have a reasonable idea of where engineering out the defects leads.

I am generally a fairly forgiving type, but as the parent of a disabled child, I found his comments both offensive and upsetting. I do understand Bills position wrt posting lounge links to external forums and I know that Connard can be somewhat abrupt, but I think Connards treatment has been excessively harsh. At least he had the balls to come out and say what other people were thinking, which I didn't, I'm ashamed to say.

Boo. A bad day. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Many thanks to all the people who did chip with useful criticism.

Honestly, I visit the Lounge for the first time in ages and stumble into this….

HornetsNestMinis23 Feb 2012 1:03 p.m. PST

If you are that easily insulted you might just get off the internet all together. That said it still cracks me up that a website devoted to WARGAMING and populated by GROWN men needs a Dawghouse at all.

The instigators and tattlers are both equally ridiculous.

Wolfprophet23 Feb 2012 1:03 p.m. PST

Oooh. Honourable mention I see.

While I enjoy the right to disagree, Connard didn't disagree. He just started flailing and insulting like a little kid while the grown-ups made real arguments.

The guy who advocates eugenics and/or genocide is back in good standing, a Trusted Member, and the guy who called him on it gets the boot.

John, the people called me on it are all in good standing and made great points, counter points and arguments for certain parts and against others. Connard didn't even attempt to do ANY of that. He closed his mind and cried expletives because he was too childish to do anything else. I would have welcomed genuine argument from him sans the personal insults just as I welcomed real discussion and stories of experience from other TMP members in the battle of point-counterpoint.

For the record books, there was no advocacy for genocide, or advocacy for APPLYING Eugenics, merely for continued research into the field up to and through the 1980s which would have greatly benefited the knowledge base upon which current Genetics Research is built.

I don't know if Wolfprophet really was playing devils advocate or whether he was using the thread as an excuse to give us the benefit of a load of nasty racial supremacist clap trap. I think many of us have a reasonable idea of where engineering out the defects leads.

Martin, call it a fair mix. At one point I was asked to come up with a solution to a problem using a method I don't agree with. That was Devil's Advocate.
For my own statements from my own view though, I was attempting to come with a solution that would genuinely help people who deserve better, but of course, that leads to the problem that humans would use such solutions for evil means. ( Now we can cue the Nazis and Racists ) I would never want to see such technology used on people for anything like "racial purity" or that sort of trash. Your skin colour, creed, ethnicity, religious beliefs and so on do not matter even one tiny bit to me. We are all people, each one unique in our own way. I just want to see diseases like Tay-Sachs and conditions like Schizophrenia silently fade away from our blood lines without violating anyone's right to live their life.

I just found out several days ago they've already done what I was proposing. Using the same methods I was advocating, 30+ children have been born without certain diseases after a gene blocking treatment was used with their parents. However, the problem with said procedure was that something like 4 of the 30 children were born with Turner Syndrome: link

Of course, that's 30 children that we know of. After that test in 2001, we've never heard a peep about it since, but the lab and it's staff are still working, so I'm betting they'll have more to report eventually.

And that! Is all I have to say here. : )
