For the Yankees: Sam Elliott (Brig. Gen. John Buford) Brian Mallon (Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock) For the South: Patrick Gorman (Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood) It was nice to see Elliott portraying Buford in a manner that brought attention to his pivotal role in the battle. Mallon had the best line in the movie, "There are times when a corps commander's life does not count." Gorman did an outstanding job acting. Rick |

Worst: Brian Mallon (Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock) Hancock was known for his great stature. Mallon was anything but. Patrick Gorman (Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood) He looked like a feeble old man. Liked Tom Berenger and Stephen Lang |

Richard Anderson(MG George Gordon Meade),brief but pivotal role. Somewhere in the middle. Lang's Pickett,Jordan's Armistead and Elliot's Buford were well played. As well as the fellow who played MG John Reynolds(John Rothman). |

Longstreet is my favorite and, at the risk of being out of line, Robert E. Lee's portrayal. The best part of his role was the interaction between him and Longstreet and how Lee always managed to assert himself. |

I thought that Tom Berenger was one of the only convincing southern accents in the film, to the point that I thought he must surely be a southerner himself, when in fact the furthest south he's ever lived is Missouri. Sam Elliott is always fun to watch, even though he always plays the same character. Who knows whether John Buford sounded like that or not, but Oh Well, it seems like that's how an American on a horse ought to sound. (But I kept waiting for him to lean over to Jeff Bridges in the bowling alley and say: "I like yer style, dude
.") In retrospect there are is whole lot of acting in that movie that is either wooden, or fairly cringe-worthy, and often both. |
