I've never understood why there is so much for one game system or period or genre or manufacturer
can someone help me out? Why do otherwise reasonable, intelligent people get their hate on about things that are fairly inconsequential? Can't we save it for the real wars or oerhaps professional sports franchises? |
Little Big Wars | 17 Feb 2012 7:59 p.m. PST |
otherwise reasonable, intelligent people I think you may be assuming better of people in general than is actually the case with that framing. Rage about inconsequential things is what people do

Because those of us who play the Wrong Game are not only Wrong, but being deliberately obstinate about it. I did a thread about this once, calling the Haters Puritans, in the snese of H L Mencken's definition. "Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." How DARE we enjoy ourselves the Wrong Way? The Haters will of course roll their eyes and complain about being labeled "haters", but that is because they are afraid to face the truth that they are just grumpy old fuddy-duddies. |

I wonder more about the persecution complex that some game systems seems to generate in it's players, very strange. |

Hate is a word far too strong and used in many situations where it just does not apply. I dislike some things that are called wargaming, because I believe they are misnamed. But 'hate'? No. There are some things that I ' strongly dislike', but again 'hate' is much too strong. The problem with electronic mail is that conversations are devoid of tone. Thus I have often expressed an opinion, and intended it in a conversational way, yet it has come across quite different to others. That then spawns some really nasty stuff. But again, I dont think I would use the term 'hate' for my reaction to some of the responses. It seems to be very difficult to discuss
fairly inconsequential without someone turning the conversation far too consequential. In spoken language I have always enjoyed debate and the too and fro of discussion. But I have learnt the hard way here on the TMP that it doesnt pay to express opinions and invite debate on some things. For example I thoroughly dislike WARHAMMER. I dont hate it. I just thoroughly dislike it and have an opinion of its effect. But trying to ' discuss ' that seems to bring on such a tirade of nasty response, that one realises opinion is not free on sites such as this. Similarly I have realised in recent months that when discussing almost ANYTHING you have to also mention that you are NOT having a RANT, merely expressing your opinion and waiting to hear that of others. |

I don't 'hate' much of anything/anyone
but sometimes it's fun to blow off steam and let the hyperbole fly about some random annoyance
especially when that annoyance is being rabidly defended by some Usual Suspect
or said person is putting the rant to something I actually like. But it never comes close to 'hate'. |

No hate is not too strong a word! There is a game out, and we all know what it is! It deserves nothing but contempt and the designers should be sued for plagiarism and defamation, then hung and shot while being drawn and quartered and then eaten! As for the game itself. There is no punishment too great for the perverts who actually enjoy that trash! As We All Know, The Abomination Must Be Purged From The Earth! BURN ALL COPIES IMMEDIATELY! I WILL NEVER SULLY MYSELF BY WRITING THE TITLE, BUT YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! Other then that, I think the hobby is big enough for every version of miniature gaming. |

I hate GW simply because I spent nearly £1,000.00 GBP on squats and three months later they were redundant. Was quite happy to continue using them but couldn't in competitions and no one else in the club would let me field them as they weren't in the latest codex. I also left the club

rampant use of colloquialisms like that? :) |

Easier to hate than to love. Hate is a hardwired human emotion derived from fear. Love is something we invented to describe lust and falsely describe a mental addiction to another human being. It just transferred to be a positive word for us to express a liking for things. Also. "Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." Made me Lawlz because it could not possibly be more true. |

Dunno. Maybe it's because if a ruleset/mini/whatever is popular it means that your favourite ruleset/mini/whatever doesn't get the love you think it deserves. |

Hate is good: It warms the cockles of the heart; It stiffens the resolve; It eradicates sympathy, empathy and naturopathy (well 2 out of 3); It justifies the unacceptable; IT RELEASES ME FROM MY CHAINS! AAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHHHHH!

The problem is the targets of our hatred are those manufacturers or publishers we think are ripping us off in some way or other;Mae dont like paying more on rule books and supplements than the lead. We don't like our armies becoming out of date because the manufacturers bring out a new codex. We know who the guilty parties are. |

Unrequited love. If A "LOVES" rule set A then he personalizes rule set A. It becomes his love, the apple of his eye, his "PRECIOUS." As in Gollum's "Me Precious." If B does not like rule set A and likes rule set B., it is a rejection of "Me Precious." Notice that Gollum uses the term "me" for mine." That is no mistake. He identifies with the precious, he is the precious. Thus in games. Rejecting the rules is rejecting the players. If you want a demonstration the next time you have someone force a newborn on you tell them it is in fact, a particularly ugly child. |
