Saw a news item a while ago about a bloke who has a lump of concrete from every WWII airbase in East Anglia.

So, do you collect samples of military concrete ?

Yes
No

epturner14 Feb 2012 9:42 a.m. PST

No, but I ship concrete barriers (Class IV).

Does that count?

Eric

I might have a couple scraps from here and there in my travels in the military :)

Only if you keep bits of them at home as souvenirs.

No but I have some sand from Gold Beach in Normandy. I use it for bases.

No. But I do have a piece of sandstone from when I worked at the White House. No soot on it from the fire though.

Really? Concrete pieces from airbases? What would you do with it?

Way before the scene in "Saving Private Ryan" where the GI collected soil from everwhere he went into a tin can; I did the same thing. Usually took a small amount of dirt in a baby food jar, and a rock that I could write the name and date on with a Sharpie…

I had quite a collection…that "went away" when I got divorced….

Paperweights. Doorstops…

epturner14 Feb 2012 11:17 a.m. PST

Errrr, maybe not at home, but we do have rather quite a few in my container yard at the moment…

And I tend to work a lot, that my office feels a bit like home. Without the fun bits, of course. Or the beagles.

Murphy. Your ex wanted to keep your baby food jars full of dirt?

Wow.

I did have a bit of Berlin Wall but it got crushed to dust in my rucksack, shoddy Communist concrete!

Got a few pieces of Berlin Wall as well, as well as assorted other bits of fence, barbed wire, a fuse box of the electrified fence, stuff like that.

epturner14 Feb 2012 1:04 p.m. PST

I have a piece of the Berlin Wall, too.

My son has a bit of the Great Wall that missionary friends brought him.

cfielitz14 Feb 2012 1:17 p.m. PST

Apparently, there is a big organization of brick collectors. A colleague is one.

Have a stone from the Perfume River from my tour in RVN from the Ashau Valley A bit of the Berlin wall. A stone from the Lion Mount at Waterloo.
And a brick fragment from the Fort Montgomery armory up near West Point before they redid it and buried the original site for a new one.
Dirt from Bastogne and Malmedy.
Also from Ahrnem

As I recall he had the little lumps of concrete placed in a neat line along (on top of) his garden path.

14Bore14 Feb 2012 4:54 p.m. PST

No but I spent two years stomping around on concrete on old WWII airbases in East Anglia

Etranger14 Feb 2012 7:07 p.m. PST

Allegedly a piece of the Sphinx, brought back during WWII by SWMBO's grandfather. Just looks like a piece of coarse sandstone to me…….

I may still have some pebbles I picked up in Pompeii.

I blush to confess possession of a tiny piece of Roman Concrete.

Not myself but with two archealogists in the family you would be surprised what bits we have littering the garage…
