As in tunic/jacket buttons, not little pin badges. Usually with some sort of insignia on it ?

Ancient relics in the form of metal buttons that predate velcro do still exist, and people do collect them.

No, I suppose not. And it's more like they seem to gather in the bottom of my duffle bag instead of me actually "collecting" them…

I collect military uniforms, most of them have buttons on.

I'm not sure I've ever come across someone who only collects buttons. IME, someone who is after buttons is someone who focuses on any and all insignia worn by specific Regiments, including pouch badges, waist belt clasps, Officers' cord bosses, etc.
